MAPAL has expanded its portfolio of precision cutting tools with the introduction of the HPR400 and HPR400 plus systems, developed specifically for the productive reaming of large-diameter bores. The new multi-bladed tool systems are designed to deliver high accuracy, stability and cost efficiency in demanding finish-machining applications.

The HPR400 series is available in multiple configurations to address varying machining requirements. The standard HPR400 version features inserts with one cutting edge, while the HPR400 plus variant offers inserts with four cutting edges. Both versions are designed for easy on-site insert exchange, allowing operators to replace worn cutting edges quickly without complex setup procedures. High-precision insert seats ensure repeatable positioning and contribute to consistent dimensional accuracy during reaming operations.

For applications involving high stock allowances in finish machining, MAPAL offers a combination tool that integrates an ISO leading stage with the HPR400 system. This configuration enables users to machine bores with up to 6 mm of stock allowance in a single working step. In this setup, ISO inserts perform the primary material removal, while the HPR400 system completes the finish machining process. The result is reduced cycle time and improved productivity, as roughing and finishing can be performed without tool changes.

A key advantage of this combination solution is the elimination of insert setting across the tool. Because the inserts are pre-aligned within the system, there is no need for additional adjustment, simplifying operation and reducing setup time. This contributes to process stability and ensures consistent machining performance, particularly in high-volume production environments.

The HPR400 plus series has also been developed for machining face grooves and bores with special base contours. The inserts are specifically adapted for applications requiring facing or face-groove geometries. According to MAPAL, the new tool concept provides two usable cutting edges, enhancing cost-effectiveness while maintaining structural stability during operation. Despite the additional geometric demands of face-groove machining, the tool system is engineered to deliver reliable and stable cutting performance.

Overall, the HPR400 and HPR400 plus systems are positioned to support manufacturers handling large-diameter bores in sectors such as automotive, heavy equipment and general mechanical engineering. By combining precision insert seating, multi-edge configurations and flexible application capability, MAPAL’s latest reaming solutions aim to optimize machining efficiency, reduce cycle times and improve overall cost performance in large-diameter finishing operations.
