L&T Special Steels and Heavy Forgings (LTSSHF) has successfully manufactured India’s heaviest hydro generator shaft for Voith Hydro, marking a significant milestone in the country’s heavy engineering and hydropower manufacturing capabilities. Weighing more than 50 metric tonnes and measuring over 8 metres in length, the shaft has been engineered to meet highly stringent quality and performance requirements, representing a first-of-its-kind achievement in India.

This accomplishment strengthens India’s ability to manufacture ultra-heavy, critical rotating equipment components domestically and aligns closely with national initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. According to LTSSHF, the project adds to its expanding portfolio of complex heavy forgings that are fully developed, validated, and benchmarked within India, demonstrating advances in engineering depth, metallurgical control, and large-scale forging expertise.

Hydro generator shafts are among the most demanding components used in hydropower plants due to their massive size, high load-bearing requirements, fatigue resistance, and the extreme precision required during manufacturing. Producing such components involves advanced forging processes, tight dimensional control, sophisticated heat treatment, and extensive inspection and testing. The successful completion of this shaft therefore represents a major step forward for India’s domestic capability in manufacturing high-performance power generation equipment.

The shaft has been manufactured for Voith Hydro for use in a project of national importance. LTSSHF acknowledged the continued trust and collaboration of Voith Hydro and the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), noting that the project reflects strong industry partnerships supporting India’s critical infrastructure development.

Commenting on the achievement, Hirdesh Shrivastava, GM Sourcing at Voith Hydro, said that the successful delivery of such a heavy shaft is a strong endorsement of India’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities. He noted that the milestone reinforces domestic self-reliance while meeting the high-quality standards required by Voith Hydro across both global and local projects.

LTSSHF highlighted that the ability to manufacture such large and critical hydro components within India reduces dependence on overseas supply chains, shortens execution timelines for domestic infrastructure programs, and contributes to long-term capability building across the heavy engineering ecosystem. The company added that the project demonstrates its ability to deliver large-scale forgings that meet demanding technical specifications for high-performance hydropower applications.

A flag-off ceremony was held to mark the dispatch of the hydro generator shaft, attended by Sachin Ambadkar, Strategic Sourcing Leader at Voith Hydro, along with senior leadership from LTSSHF. The event underscored the close collaboration between the two organisations and the successful execution of a complex manufacturing program with strict adherence to quality, precision, and delivery timelines. LTSSHF stated that it will continue to invest in advanced forging technologies, testing infrastructure, and manufacturing excellence to support the evolving needs of India’s power generation and heavy engineering sectors while delivering components that meet global benchmarks.
