Horn USA Inc. Introduces 1A Chipbreaker Geometry to Improve Chip Control and Process Reliability!

Monday 29 December 2025, 7:20:20 AM

Horn USA Inc. has expanded the capabilities of its 274 tool system with the introduction of the new 1A chipbreaker geometry, specifically developed to enhance chip control and process reliability during grooving and parting-off operations on sliding-head lathes. The new geometry is designed to address one of the most common challenges in turning operations—uncontrolled chip formation—while supporting stable and predictable machining across a wide range of materials.

The 1A sintered chipbreaker geometry is engineered to promote consistent chip breaking and evacuation during turning, reducing the risk of chip entanglement around the tool or workpiece. Improved chip control is critical in sliding-head lathe applications, where limited space and continuous bar-fed operation demand high process stability. By ensuring chips are broken effectively and cleared from the cutting zone, the 1A geometry helps manufacturers maintain uninterrupted production and reduce the likelihood of tool damage or surface defects.

The new geometry is offered as an indexable insert with two cutting edges, supporting cost efficiency and extended tool utilization. Inserts are available in cutting widths of 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm, covering a broad range of common grooving and parting applications. Depending on the insert width, the system supports maximum grooving depths between 3 mm and 6 mm, providing flexibility for different component geometries and machining requirements.

Horn offers the 1A chipbreaker inserts in TH35 and IG35 carbide grades, allowing users to select the most appropriate grade based on material type, cutting parameters, and desired tool life. These grades are designed to balance wear resistance and toughness, making the system suitable for machining a variety of materials commonly processed on sliding-head lathes.

To support integration across different machine platforms, Horn provides an extensive range of toolholders for the 274 system. This wide holder selection enables adaptation to various lathe configurations and setups, helping manufacturers standardize tooling while maintaining flexibility across machines and applications.

A key advantage of the 274 tool system is its exceptional repeatability, with turning accuracy of less than 0.02 mm when indexing the double-edged insert. This high level of precision is achieved through accurate peripheral grinding of the inserts combined with a stable and precisely engineered insert seat. Consistent repeatability not only improves dimensional accuracy but also reduces setup time and the need for frequent tool adjustments.

With the introduction of the 1A chipbreaker geometry, Horn USA Inc. further strengthens the 274 system as a reliable solution for grooving and parting operations in high-precision, high-volume environments. By combining effective chip control, precise repeatability, and flexible tooling options, the new geometry helps manufacturers improve machining stability, protect tool life, and maintain consistent part quality in demanding sliding-head lathe applications.
