BorgWarner, a global leader in advanced mobility solutions, has strengthened its long-standing partnership with Chinese automaker Chery by signing multiple new agreements to supply state-of-the-art all-wheel drive (AWD) technologies. The collaboration includes the introduction of BorgWarner’s torque-on-demand transfer case with mechanical lock (Mlock TOD) and the sixth-generation Cross Wheel Drive (Gen VI XWD) system. Production for these systems is expected to begin in 2027, marking another significant milestone in the partnership that continues to evolve with technological advancements and market expansion.
This collaboration underscores BorgWarner’s position as a trusted technology partner with deep expertise in powertrain innovation and drivetrain systems. According to Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Drivetrain and Morse Systems, the agreement reflects the company’s commitment to delivering world-class solutions that align with Chery’s growth ambitions in both domestic and international markets. “Our strong technology base and extensive experience continue to support Chery’s expansion and success in the global automotive landscape,” McKenzie noted.
For Chery’s upcoming line of pickup trucks, BorgWarner will provide its advanced Mlock TOD transfer case equipped with the proprietary HY-VO® chain technology. This system is engineered to deliver higher efficiency at elevated speeds while ensuring superior performance across different terrains. The transfer case offers multiple driving modes — including 2H and AUTO — that optimise fuel economy and enhance smoothness during regular road driving. Additionally, the mechanical lock settings — 4H Lock and 4L Lock — ensure greater off-road capability, offering enhanced traction, stability, and climbing power even in the most demanding conditions.
Chery’s SUV range will feature BorgWarner’s cutting-edge sixth-generation Cross Wheel Drive (Gen VI XWD) system. This system is built around a highly efficient and compact design that incorporates an advanced coupling mechanism and an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD). The Gen VI XWD also integrates a modular piston pump, a brushless DC motor, and a lightweight controller — all of which contribute to reduced weight, lower costs, and improved overall system efficiency. These innovations enable precise torque management and faster response times, resulting in improved vehicle handling, stability, and traction on all surfaces.
With the Gen VI XWD system, Chery’s SUVs will be better equipped to meet the growing demand for performance-oriented, safe, and fuel-efficient vehicles in both urban and off-road environments. The system’s adaptability ensures superior grip and control, providing a seamless driving experience even in challenging weather and road conditions.
This expanded partnership between BorgWarner and Chery is a testament to the shared vision of delivering next-generation mobility solutions that combine performance, sustainability, and innovation. By integrating BorgWarner’s advanced drivetrain technologies, Chery continues to strengthen its position as one of China’s most forward-thinking automotive manufacturers, ready to compete on a global scale.
As the automotive industry moves toward smarter, more efficient, and electrified powertrains, collaborations like this highlight the importance of technological synergy and engineering excellence in shaping the future of mobility.
