In October, MTDCNC’s Paul Jones, together with Lee Scott and Joe Amos, will be heading back to Bielefeld — the home of the Starrag Group, where some of the largest vertical lathes, boring machines, and multi-process machine tools in the world are designed and built. These are machines on a scale that few manufacturers ever get to see up close.
When Paul last visited in 2023, he witnessed the assembly of a huge vertical turning machine destined for the power generation sector. The size of this machine was staggering — so big it was almost hard to take in — and it was just one of several machines ordered as part of a major project.

Later this month, the MTDCNC team will return with the cameras to take a closer look at the new technologies being developed for large-part manufacturing.

From design challenges to precision across multiple disciplines, we’ll be uncovering how Starrag continues to push the limits of machining on a massive scale.
