Walter has unveiled the Drion∙tec D-Spade D5142, a next-generation replaceable tip drill designed to lower cost per edge and enhance performance across various drilling applications. Marking a breakthrough in tooling innovation, the D5142 is the first drill of its kind to feature a symmetrical, double-sided insert (DS42)—providing two cutting edges per insert, effectively reducing tool change frequency and cutting costs.
At the heart of the drill’s performance is its six strategically placed coolant outlets—three per cutting tooth—targeting the main cutting edge, chisel edge, and circumference. This ensures precise cooling directly at the cutting zone, supporting better thermal management, extended tool life, and improved hole quality. The 120-degree point angle allows for inclined entry up to 10° and exit up to 20°, significantly outperforming standard drills that typically manage only up to 5°. Its design also supports cross-hole drilling, thanks to four ground margins that contribute to both operational stability and excellent surface finishes.
The DS42 insert is crafted from WPP25-grade carbide, coated with AlTiN via HiPIMS (High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering) for superior wear resistance. A distinctive gold-colored top layer improves visual wear detection, enabling timely insert changes and reducing the risk of tool failure during production. The drill is optimized for steel (ISO P materials) and performs reliably with cast iron (ISO K) and non-ferrous metals (ISO N), making it a versatile tool for a wide range of manufacturing applications.
Available in diameters from 12 to 25.70 mm, the Drion∙tec D5142 supports drilling depths of 3xD and 5xD, making it suitable for both blind and through-hole drilling, as well as for stack and laminate material combinations. The drill’s design includes polished chip flutes for smooth chip evacuation, radial clamping screws for secure insert retention, and precision-ground seating surfaces to ensure accurate insert positioning and repeatability.
Walter’s Drion∙tec D5142 delivers a compelling solution for manufacturers looking to maximize productivity, reduce tooling costs, and maintain high-quality output—particularly in demanding drilling environments where tool durability and efficiency are non-negotiable.
