Siemens Digital Industries Software has partnered with the University of Michigan (U-M) Center for Academic Innovation to launch “Introduction to 3D Printing with Metals,” a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). This initiative aims to increase industrial adoption of Additive Manufacturing (AM) while preparing the next-generation workforce.
The course, designed by U-M’s Chinedum Okwudire and Dr. Nathaniel Wood, in collaboration with Siemens, covers essential manufacturing methods using metals, including their advantages, limitations, and practical applications. This free and accessible course provides professionals, students, and hobbyists with foundational knowledge on metal AM processes, such as Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition, along with pre-processing, design, and post-processing techniques.
Offered on Coursera, the course also includes hands-on learning experiences through augmented reality. Aaron Frankel, Vice President at Siemens, emphasized the importance of building a skilled workforce to harness the full potential of metal AM for industrial-scale production. The collaboration between Siemens and U-M represents a significant step toward fostering innovation and expanding the global workforce in the field of metal Additive Manufacturing.
