The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have issued its latest report on the UK automotive industry, highlighting a record year for engine production.
In the year to date, UK automakers have manufactured over 2 million engines, an increase of 5% on 2016 figures. In September 2017, the UK produced 248, 463 units for UK and export markets, a climb of 3.9% over 2016 figures. The domestic demand climbed 11.1% compared with September 2016 whilst exports making up 51.3% share of the output.
Commenting upon the latest figures, SMMT Chief Executive Mr Mike Hawes says: “UK engine manufacturing has repeatedly demonstrated the benefits of long-term investment into R&D and plants. It’s pleasing to see production exceed the 2 million mark already. However, future success depends on strong demand at home and abroad. The European market, which is the destination for the majority of our engines, continues to grow so it’s important we maintain free and frictionless access.”
