Roshel and Algoma Steel Form Joint Venture to Boost Domestic Ballistic Steel Production!
Algoma Steel Group Inc. and Roshel Inc. have announced a strategic joint venture, Roshel Algoma Defence Solutions Inc., aimed at expanding domestic production of ballistic steel in Canada. The partnership reflects a broader push to strengthen national defence capabilities and reduce reliance on imported materials.
The joint venture is set to establish a Canadian Centre of Excellence for ballistic steel production, offering fully integrated capabilities that include fabrication, forming, welding, and machining within the country. By creating a complete, end-to-end production ecosystem, the initiative is designed to support defence procurement programs with high-quality, domestically manufactured materials.
This development comes at a time of increasing defence investment by the Canadian government, with a growing emphasis on building sovereign industrial capacity. The partnership aligns with national priorities to enhance local manufacturing resilience while encouraging domestic sourcing for critical defence applications.
Roshel Algoma Defence Solutions is expected to play a key role in supplying ballistic steel for a wide range of defence programs. These include light utility vehicles, Arctic mobility platforms, naval systems, and other military applications. Beyond defence, the companies also see potential for ballistic steel in sectors such as infrastructure, marine, aerospace, and security, expanding its commercial relevance.
In addition to strengthening domestic supply chains, the venture is positioned to support export opportunities, enabling Canadian-made ballistic steel to reach allied international markets. This could enhance Canada’s role in global defence manufacturing and materials supply.
The initiative is also expected to have a positive impact on employment, with the potential to support more than 500 workers, including new roles in manufacturing and engineering. It will also contribute to the broader industrial ecosystem, including connections to automotive manufacturing through companies such as Ford Motor Company and its operations in Oakville.
Overall, the partnership between Roshel and Algoma Steel represents a significant step toward building a more self-reliant and globally competitive defence manufacturing base, combining material expertise with advanced fabrication capabilities to meet evolving security and industrial demands.
