OMRON Corporation has introduced Automation Playback, a groundbreaking feature available on its new NX5 automation controller. This unique functionality acts like a “time machine” for the production line, allowing manufacturers to track and resolve issues in real-time without disrupting operations.
In a fast-paced manufacturing environment, every second of downtime matters. With Automation Playback, users can replay data from moments leading up to a stoppage, identifying exactly where and when things went wrong. Acting as a “black box” for the production line, the NX5 controller stores real-time data and integrates with external cameras to capture synchronized video footage. This allows engineers to conduct a thorough investigation of any issue without performance slowdowns.
Josep Martí, EMEA Product Marketing Manager at OMRON, explained that the NX5 controller can make troubleshooting more efficient. “Typically, when a machine stops, it can be hard to understand what went wrong. With Automation Playback, you get detailed data and video evidence to see exactly what happened, saving valuable time and resources,” he said.
The Automation Playback feature is designed with simplicity in mind, making implementation straightforward. Users can select the data to record, hit the REC button, and set the recording time, allowing engineers to focus on solving problems rather than dealing with complex setups.
In addition to simplifying troubleshooting, Automation Playback reduces commissioning time, capturing thousands of control cycles per second. This feature is invaluable in industries facing a global shortage of skilled technicians, as teams can remotely review and resolve issues from anywhere in the world, reducing the need for onsite troubleshooting.
Automation Playback is especially beneficial for industries like EV manufacturing, where downtime can result in significant financial loss. The NX5 controller can store up to 15 minutes of data before and after a stoppage, allowing teams to quickly identify and address issues, keeping production on track.
In pharmaceutical production, this feature helps ensure product quality and compliance by identifying production issues in real-time, reducing the risk of costly recalls and minimizing downtime.
The NX5 operates on OMRON’s Sysmac integrated automation platform, which unifies the control of devices such as controllers, motion systems, vision systems, and safety systems into a single architecture. This platform simplifies automation processes while providing real-time control and data processing, making it a powerful tool for modern manufacturing.
