Metal Supermarkets Doubles Trade School Scholarship Funding to Support Skilled Workforce!
Metal Supermarkets has expanded its Trade School Scholarship program, increasing total funding to $20,000 as part of its ongoing effort to address the growing shortage of skilled trades professionals across North America.
Now in its fifth year, the program will award eight scholarships of $2,500 each to students in the United States and Canada, doubling the number of recipients compared to previous years. The initiative reflects the rising demand for skilled workers, particularly in fields such as welding and metal fabrication, where workforce gaps continue to widen.
Industry projections highlight the urgency of this challenge. The United States is expected to require more than 320,000 new welding professionals by 2029, while Canada may need over 256,000 skilled trades workers in the coming decade. Despite this demand, awareness of trade careers remains limited, with a company-commissioned survey indicating that more than 60 percent of respondents were not introduced to trade school pathways during high school.
Metal Supermarkets first launched the scholarship program in 2022 to coincide with National Welding Month, with the goal of promoting careers in the trades and supporting students pursuing technical education. Since its inception, the program has awarded $40,000 to 16 recipients, with women representing half of the scholarship winners—an encouraging sign of increasing diversity in the trades.
According to Ryan Pryznyk, the company remains committed to investing in the next generation of skilled professionals. He emphasised that doubling the scholarship funding will help more students access education and training, contributing to a stronger and more sustainable workforce.
Past recipients have highlighted the impact of the program in enabling them to pursue hands-on training and build careers in welding and related fields. The scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also supports skill development and career readiness in a sector critical to manufacturing and infrastructure.
Applications for the 2026 scholarship are open until June 30, with recipients to be announced by July 31. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in or accepted to a post-secondary trade school program beginning in 2026 and meet specified residency and academic requirements.
Overall, the expansion of the scholarship program underscores Metal Supermarkets’ commitment to workforce development and its role in helping bridge the skills gap by encouraging more students to pursue careers in the trades.
