Merlinhawk and Vega Composites Launch Advanced Aerospace Composites Facility in Tamil Nadu Defence Corridor!
Merlinhawk Aerospace Pvt. Ltd., in collaboration with Italy-based Vega Composites, has inaugurated Merlinhawk Composites & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., a state-of-the-art advanced composites manufacturing facility at Shoolagiri in the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor. The new facility marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities while advancing the country’s vision of becoming a global hub for high-performance engineering, advanced materials and defence production. The project also reflects the growing importance of international technology partnerships in accelerating India’s defence self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The facility was inaugurated by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, PVSM, AVSM, NM, Former Chief of the Naval Staff, in the presence of senior industry leaders, international technology partners and representatives from India’s aerospace, defence and manufacturing sectors. The collaboration brings together Merlinhawk’s decades of experience in defence systems and avionics with Vega Composites’ expertise in advanced composite technologies, creating a strategic Indo-Italian partnership focused on delivering world-class aerospace manufacturing capabilities from India.
Designed as an integrated manufacturing centre for advanced composite aerostructures and high-performance aerospace components, the Shoolagiri facility will cater to a broad range of defence and civil aviation applications. Its manufacturing capabilities extend to military aircraft, civil aerospace platforms, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), radar systems, electronic warfare equipment and other mission-critical defence technologies. By enabling the domestic production of complex composite structures, the facility is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imported aerospace materials and strengthen local supply chains for strategic defence programmes.
The manufacturing plant incorporates comprehensive end-to-end production capabilities covering the complete lifecycle of advanced composite component manufacturing. These include precision material cutting, cleanroom composite lay-up, autoclave curing, advanced bonding technologies and five-axis CNC machining. By integrating design, engineering, manufacturing, machining and final assembly within a single facility, Merlinhawk Composites & Engineering provides a complete indigenous solution for producing complex aerospace-grade composite components while significantly increasing domestic value addition.
Speaking during the inauguration, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi highlighted Merlinhawk Aerospace’s four-decade contribution toward the localisation of advanced avionics and defence technologies in India. He stated that the collaboration with Vega Composites represents another important milestone in bringing world-class composite manufacturing technologies to the country and strengthening India’s aerospace and defence ecosystem. According to him, the project aligns closely with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by promoting indigenous manufacturing, technological self-reliance and the development of advanced engineering capabilities.
R. Ramachandra Rao, Founder and Managing Director of Merlinhawk Aerospace Pvt. Ltd., described the new facility as a major step in the company’s evolution from systems engineering into advanced aerospace manufacturing. He emphasized that as modern aerospace platforms increasingly rely on lightweight, high-strength composite materials to improve performance and fuel efficiency, India must continue developing expertise in material science, precision engineering and advanced manufacturing technologies. He added that the partnership with Vega Composites successfully combines European technological excellence with Indian engineering capabilities to support both domestic defence programmes and global aerospace supply chains.
The facility has been equipped with globally recognised manufacturing processes and advanced production equipment sourced from leading European technology partners. Beyond strengthening manufacturing capacity, the collaboration is expected to facilitate technology transfer, develop specialised technical skills and improve India’s competitiveness in the production of advanced composite materials for aerospace and defence applications. Commodore (Retd.) Bharat Bhushan Nagpal, Chief Executive Officer of Merlinhawk Composites & Engineering Pvt. Ltd., stated that the facility has been established with a strong focus on precision manufacturing, rigorous quality assurance and full compliance with international aerospace standards. In addition to manufacturing activities, the company will invest in workforce development, process excellence and building a sustainable ecosystem for advanced engineering in India.
Roberto Lapini, Chief Executive Officer of Vega Composites, noted that India presents significant opportunities to emerge as a strategic global manufacturing destination for advanced composite technologies. He described the joint venture as a long-term industrial partnership that will promote technology transfer, collaborative product development and globally competitive manufacturing capabilities. With its advanced infrastructure, international expertise and focus on indigenous production, the new Shoolagiri facility is expected to play an important role in strengthening India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem while supporting the country’s ambition to become a leading global supplier of advanced composite engineering solutions.
