Lang Technik has introduced the RoboTrex Compact Automation System at IMTS 2026, showcasing a space-efficient robotic automation solution designed to maximise CNC machine utilisation, improve productivity, and support extended unattended manufacturing. Developed specifically for small-part production environments, the RoboTrex Compact combines automated workpiece handling with high-density storage and an integrated industrial robot, enabling manufacturers to increase spindle uptime while reducing reliance on manual labour. The system is aimed at helping machine shops and precision manufacturers embrace automation without requiring significant factory floor space or major production changes.

As manufacturers continue to face increasing labour shortages, rising production costs, and growing demand for higher output, automation has become an essential investment across the machining industry. Robotic machine tending is one of the most practical automation solutions available, allowing CNC machines to operate continuously with minimal operator intervention. By automating repetitive loading and unloading operations, manufacturers can improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), reduce idle machine time, and enable skilled employees to focus on programming, quality control, and process optimisation.

The RoboTrex Compact has been engineered to address these challenges while maintaining an exceptionally small footprint. Occupying only around two square metres of floor space, the system delivers high-capacity automated workpiece storage without sacrificing valuable production area. This compact design makes it particularly attractive for manufacturers operating space-constrained facilities or looking to expand automation without investing in larger production cells.

At the heart of the RoboTrex Compact is an integrated FANUC industrial robot that automatically loads and unloads workpieces weighing up to 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds). The robot provides fast, reliable and repeatable part handling, ensuring consistent loading accuracy throughout production while significantly reducing manual intervention. Automated handling also minimises the risk of workpiece damage, positioning errors, and production inconsistencies that can occur with manual loading.

The automation system has been developed specifically for small-part manufacturing applications where multiple production runs and high product variation are common. By combining robotic handling with intelligent workpiece management, the RoboTrex Compact enables manufacturers to extend machine operating hours, improve throughput, and support lights-out production strategies. Machines can continue producing components during breaks, overnight shifts, or weekends, allowing manufacturers to maximise spindle utilisation without increasing labour costs.
