Methods Machine Tools Debuts Nakamura-Tome JX-50 Mill-Turn Centre for High-Precision Multi-Axis Manufacturing!

Methods Machine Tools has introduced the Nakamura-Tome JX-50 mill-turn machining centre to the North American market at IMTS 2026, showcasing a next-generation manufacturing solution designed to improve the production of small, complex precision components. Developed by Nakamura-Tome, the five-axis, automatic tool changer (ATC)-type, B-axis machining centre combines turning, milling and multi-axis machining capabilities within a compact footprint, enabling manufacturers to complete multiple operations in a single setup while improving productivity, precision and operational flexibility.

The North American debut of the JX-50 reflects the growing demand for highly versatile machining centres capable of handling increasingly complex components across industries such as aerospace, medical devices, automotive, electronics, precision engineering and advanced industrial manufacturing. As manufacturers seek to reduce setup times, increase machine utilisation and improve machining accuracy, integrated mill-turn platforms have become an essential part of modern production environments.

One of the key strengths of the Nakamura-Tome JX-50 is its ability to consolidate several machining processes into one compact machine. Traditional production of intricate components often requires multiple machines and repeated workpiece transfers between turning, milling and drilling operations. Every transfer introduces additional setup time and the possibility of positioning errors. By integrating these operations within a single machine, the JX-50 minimises part handling, shortens production cycles and delivers greater dimensional consistency throughout the manufacturing process.

Despite its advanced capabilities, the JX-50 has been engineered with a remarkably compact footprint, measuring approximately 13.9 feet by 7.8 feet, including the chip tank and chip conveyor. This space-saving design enables manufacturers to maximise production capacity without requiring significant factory floor space, making the machine particularly attractive for high-value precision machining facilities where efficient use of manufacturing space is a priority.

The machining centre features a twin-spindle configuration consisting of an upper tool spindle and a lower turret that work together to deliver flexible, high-speed machining. This configuration allows multiple machining operations to be performed efficiently while reducing idle time between processes. The addition of an independent X-axis on the right spindle enables simultaneous machining without interference, allowing more tools to remain engaged during each production cycle. This capability significantly improves machining efficiency and reduces overall cycle times, particularly for complex components requiring multiple operations.

The JX-50 is equipped with Nakamura-Tome’s advanced NT Smart Cube technology, which integrates the machine’s high-speed machining capabilities into a highly compact spindle design. The upper tool spindle operates at speeds of up to 30,000 rpm while maintaining a compact overall length of just 15.7 inches. This combination of high spindle speed and compact construction enables exceptional machining performance while providing excellent accessibility for intricate component geometries.

Complementing the upper spindle is a lower turret featuring milling capability with Y-axis functionality and spindle speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. This additional machining flexibility enables the production of highly complex features without requiring secondary operations. Both the left and right turning spindles are capable of operating at speeds of up to 6,000 rpm, providing ample performance for a wide range of turning applications while maintaining excellent accuracy and surface finish.

Tool capacity is another area where the JX-50 delivers significant productivity advantages. The standard automatic tool changer accommodates 60 tools, allowing manufacturers to perform a broad range of machining operations without manual intervention. For facilities requiring even greater flexibility, optional configurations expand tool capacity to as many as 119 tools. The large tool magazine supports complex component production involving numerous machining operations while minimising downtime associated with tool changes.

Further enhancing productivity is Nakamura-Tome’s ChronoCut software, which delivers a chip-to-chip tool change time of approximately 3.3 seconds. Fast tool changes play a crucial role in reducing non-cutting time, particularly during the machining of highly intricate components requiring frequent tool changes. By minimising idle machine time, manufacturers can significantly improve throughput and overall equipment effectiveness while maintaining consistent machining quality.

Visitors to IMTS 2026 also had the opportunity to witness live cutting demonstrations of the JX-50 throughout the exhibition. Nakamura-Tome Chief Executive Officer Shogo Nakamura personally presented the new machining centre, highlighting its advanced engineering, multi-axis capabilities and productivity advantages. Live machining demonstrations provided manufacturers with an opportunity to observe the machine’s performance under real production conditions while showcasing its ability to efficiently produce complex precision components.
