At the forefront of additive manufacturing, Byrnes Dental Lab in London produces over 100 dental models a day. When the Covid-19 crisis hit, instead of shutting the lab, the company scaled down the team and switched efforts to face shield production.
Carbon, the company that supplies Byrnes Dental with its 3D-printers rapidly deployed validated face shield designs and instructions for their M2 printers, allowing Byrnes Dental to switch production to PPE. Working with dental companies, dentists, surgeons and the public to ensure these face shields were sponsored, Byrnes Dental set about delivering direct to NHS related workers. Shifting production to 24/7 to meet demand, the lab has now produced over 4,000 face shields that are being used by doctors, nurses, paramedics, the air ambulance service and care homes. It is with thanks to these sponsors; this PPE does not cost the NHS a penny.
