The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is a multi-campus university spread across six campuses in Athlone, Limerick city, Thurles, Clonmel and Ennis. Formed on October 1^st 2021 as a result of a merger between two former Institutes of Technology; Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT), TUS is home to over 14,000 students throughout the Midlands and Midwest regions of Ireland.

By providing a healthy supply of high-quality graduates and an additional focal point for growth and innovation, TUS plays an integral part in regional development. From a national perspective, a technological university in the heart of Ireland adds a new dimension to education in the country, demonstrating a commitment to shared values like inclusivity, accessibility, and supportiveness.

TUS implements a continuous focus on partnership, innovation and staying agile through working with key stakeholders across industry and society.

Education

Although the name has changed, the educational values of AIT and LIT are still very much part of TUS. At the core of these values is TUS’s distinctive approach to teaching and learning known as Active Learning. Whatever discipline area is offered the core methodology is active and practical; lab work, studio work, case studies, field visits, group assignments and more.

This approach to teaching and learning is embedded in assessment strategies and campus development so that the learning environment reflects the identities of TUS’s past and it’s future. It is also underpinned by staff developments such as workshops and an online repository of active learning strategies.

TUS has a clear focus on meeting the evolving needs of society and industry through applied learning and innovative thinking.  By putting the individual needs of their students front-and-centre, TUS prioritises accessibility and opportunity for all. Combining their student-first philosophy with next-generation thinking, TUS is helping to drive the Midlands and Midwest regions forward through education, research, and commercial collaboration.
