From Shop Floor Operator to Manufacturing Business Owner: The Toronto CNC Story
By Arthur Field
During its latest manufacturing road trip across Canada, MTDCNC visited Toronto CNC to meet founder Amit U. and learn how determination, continuous learning, and calculated risk-taking have fuelled the company’s rapid growth.
What emerged was a story that highlights the opportunities available within modern manufacturing and demonstrates how ambition, when combined with action, can create remarkable results.
Amit’s journey into manufacturing began at the age of 16. Starting in an entry-level role operating machinery, he quickly developed a desire to understand more than just the basics of production. Rather than simply running machines, he focused on learning setups, programming, and process improvement, constantly looking for ways to increase efficiency and standardise operations.
After completing school, Amit pursued manufacturing engineering studies but soon realised his learning was progressing faster on the shop floor than in the classroom. He continued developing his practical skills within the industry, gaining valuable experience across a range of manufacturing disciplines.
At the age of 21, he made the decision that would define the next chapter of his career: launching his own manufacturing business.
Just one year later, despite having no previous CNC milling experience, Amit purchased his first Hurco machining centre and committed himself to learning everything required to make the investment successful. Working alongside a small team, he quickly established the foundations of what would become Toronto CNC.
Growth followed rapidly.

Within the first year, the business expanded to include additional Hurco machining centres, a Nakamura-Tome turning centre, and a growing workforce. Machines were utilised around the clock, allowing the company to increase capacity and build a reputation for quality and reliability.
As customer demand continued to increase, Toronto CNC eventually outgrew its original facility. At the age of 27, Amit relocated the business to a larger premises and simultaneously invested in additional equipment, including a Nakamura NTY3-150 multitasking machine and further machining capacity to support future growth.
Today, Toronto CNC employs a dedicated team and continues to expand its capabilities while serving customers across a range of industries. The business has become a strong example of how entrepreneurial thinking and technical expertise can combine to create a successful modern manufacturing company.
Throughout MTDCNC’s visit, one theme consistently emerged: preparation.
Amit attributes much of his success to a simple philosophy.

“Preparation plus opportunity equals luck.”
That mindset has helped guide every stage of the company’s development, from purchasing its first machine tool to expanding into larger facilities and investing in advanced manufacturing technology.
For MTDCNC, the visit served as a powerful reminder of the opportunities that exist within the manufacturing sector for those willing to embrace challenges and invest in their future.
“Stories like Amit’s are incredibly important for the manufacturing industry,” said Tom Skubala of MTDCNC. “They show the next generation that there are multiple paths to success within manufacturing. What impressed me most wasn’t just the growth of the business, but the willingness to take action, learn continuously, and build something from the ground up.”
As manufacturers across North America continue to address skills shortages and inspire future talent, success stories such as Toronto CNC demonstrate the exciting opportunities available to young people entering the industry today.
MTDCNC would like to thank Amit and the entire Toronto CNC team for sharing their journey and providing insight into the mindset, determination, and investment that continue to drive the company’s success.
