Carbide inserts are known for their high tungsten content, boasting around 250 times more tungsten than the original tungsten ore. This makes them an important focus for recycling efforts, as tungsten is a valuable resource that can be recycled repeatedly without depreciating in quality.
In addition to their recycling potential, tungsten, a key component of carbide inserts, has an intriguing etymology. The word “tungsten” is derived from Swedish, translating to “heavy stone,” a name reflective of the mineral’s high density. This connection to Sweden points to the straightforward and descriptive nature of the name, emphasizing the element’s significant characteristics.
Sandvik Coromant encourages the industry to consider the lifecycle of their inserts, suggesting that when a carbide insert reaches the end of its useful life, it marks the beginning of a new cycle as the material can be reused.
