Sandvik Coromant has announced a significant focus on sustainability in manufacturing, emphasising practices that integrate environmental considerations into production rather than treating them as an afterthought. The company is setting a precedent with its steel turning inserts, which are now composed of more than 65% recycled carbide. This innovation is designed to provide high performance, long tool life, and efficient metal removal rates.
The approach highlights how steel turning can remain profitable whilst promoting circular material usage and reducing carbon emissions. Despite its benefits, the integration of sustainability at the core of manufacturing processes remains a minority practice. According to Sandvik Coromant’s latest manufacturing wellness report, although a majority of manufacturers are engaging with circularity, only a few have enshrined these practices within formal policies. The report suggests that those who do often achieve more substantial advancements in sustainability.
The research underpinning Sandvik Coromant’s product claims is based on a life cycle inventory study conducted with data from suppliers anticipated in 2025. This study compares the CO2 footprint of using recycled materials against traditional materials. However, the company acknowledges that these calculations have not yet undergone third-party validation.
Sandvik Coromant, a leader in cutting tools and solutions, continues to push industry boundaries by advocating for sustainability. The firm is encouraging manufacturers to download the comprehensive report to better understand the current state of circularity in the industry.
