In a significant move aimed at accelerating the modernization of China’s agricultural machinery industry, Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG Group) and German technology leader ZF Friedrichshafen AG have signed a joint venture agreement to develop advanced transmission technologies for agricultural equipment. The agreement, signed on June 2 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, marks a major milestone in the collaboration between the two companies and underscores their shared commitment to advancing intelligent, high-performance farming machinery.

As part of the partnership, the companies will establish ZF (Xuzhou) Machinery Co., Ltd., which will be headquartered in the Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone (XETDZ) in Jiangsu Province, China. The new venture will focus on the research, development, production, and localization of advanced powershift transmission systems specifically designed for agricultural machinery applications.

The establishment of the joint venture comes at a time when China’s agricultural sector is experiencing rapid transformation. Increasing demand for larger, more powerful, and technologically advanced farming equipment is driving manufacturers to adopt innovative solutions that improve efficiency, productivity, and operational performance. Transmission systems have become a critical component in this evolution, particularly as modern tractors and agricultural machines require greater power management, smoother operation, and enhanced fuel efficiency.

The newly formed company aims to combine the strengths of both organizations. XCMG brings extensive expertise in the design and manufacturing of high-end agricultural and construction equipment, while ZF contributes decades of global leadership in drivetrain and transmission technologies. Together, the companies intend to create a new generation of transmission solutions tailored to the specific needs of China’s agricultural machinery market while meeting international performance standards.

Yang Dongsheng, Chairman of XCMG Group and XCMG Machinery, emphasized that China’s agricultural machinery industry is entering a new era characterized by increasing automation, intelligence, and large-scale mechanization. He noted that powershift transmission technology is becoming an essential requirement for modern agricultural equipment, enabling operators to achieve higher productivity, improved machine performance, and more efficient field operations.

According to Yang, the partnership represents a strategic opportunity to leverage global technology expertise while supporting the development of China’s domestic agricultural equipment industry. By combining advanced engineering capabilities with localized manufacturing and application knowledge, the joint venture is expected to create highly competitive products capable of serving both domestic and international markets.

A key objective of ZF (Xuzhou) Machinery Co., Ltd. will be the localization of advanced transmission technologies. The company plans to integrate internationally recognized engineering standards with products specifically adapted to local farming conditions and customer requirements. This approach will help ensure that agricultural equipment manufacturers have access to transmission systems optimized for China’s diverse agricultural environments and operational challenges.

Beyond transmission development, the collaboration will also focus on the joint creation of new components and integrated system solutions designed to improve machine reliability, efficiency, durability, and overall performance. These innovations are expected to support the broader trend toward smart agriculture, where technology plays an increasingly important role in enhancing productivity and sustainability.

Andreas Moser, Member of the Board of Management at ZF, highlighted the strategic significance of China within the company’s global growth strategy. He noted that ZF has maintained a strong presence in China for more than 40 years and continues to invest heavily in local innovation, research, and manufacturing capabilities.

Moser stated that the new joint venture will play an important role in expanding the adoption of advanced powershift transmission technologies while supporting the development of next-generation agricultural machinery. The initiative aligns with ZF’s broader mission of delivering innovative technology solutions that enhance efficiency, reliability, and performance across industrial sectors.

For China’s agricultural machinery industry, the partnership represents more than a manufacturing collaboration. It reflects the growing integration of global technology expertise with local industrial capabilities, creating opportunities for accelerated innovation and increased competitiveness. As the country continues to modernize its agricultural sector, access to advanced drivetrain technologies will be critical for improving productivity, reducing operational costs, and meeting the evolving demands of modern farming.

The joint venture also strengthens China’s position in the global agricultural machinery market by supporting the development of sophisticated equipment capable of competing with international manufacturers. Through advanced transmission systems, localized innovation, and collaborative engineering, XCMG and ZF are helping shape the future of agricultural mechanization.

As farming operations worldwide continue to embrace automation, precision agriculture, and intelligent machinery, the partnership between XCMG Group and ZF stands as a significant step toward delivering the technologies that will power the next generation of agricultural equipment and contribute to more productive and sustainable farming practices.
