Starting his career in the early 1900s, he gained invaluable experience with Swiss truck manufacturer Saurer before transitioning to BMW in 1919. At BMW, Grob excelled in leading the company’s training workshop, a role he diligently fulfilled until he ventured out on his own in 1924.
The formation of Ernst Grob Werkzeug- und Maschinenfabrik in Munich in 1926 marked the beginning of his impactful contributions to the field. Recognised for his versatility, he developed a weaving machine and introduced innovative thread-rolling machines. His pioneering work in the machine tool industry was underscored by his inventive contributions, particularly the process developed in 1939 for cold profile rolling of metal parts.
Ernst Grob’s journey was not limited to technological advancements. Beyond engineering, he was a passionate mountaineer, conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in 1935, and pursued various adventurous exploits, reinforcing his reputation as a dynamic and multifaceted individual.
Despite the challenges in the post-war years, Grob’s determination and optimism were pivotal in motivating his employees and rebuilding the company. His vision extended beyond Germany when he returned to Switzerland in 1952 to establish Ernst Grob Kaltwalzmaschinen in Männedorf, near Zurich.
Even in his later years, Grob’s enthusiasm for engineering persisted. He attended the prestigious EMO trade fair in Paris in 1983 at the age of 90, demonstrating his lifelong curiosity and commitment to innovation. His leadership was characterised by empathy and understanding, fostering a nurturing environment for his employees.
