From Hobby to High-End Production. Lunia 3D Invests in HP MJF Technology to Drive Manufacturing Growth in Wales
By Lyndsey Vickers
What started as a shared interest in 3D printing between two lifelong friends has rapidly evolved into one of the most exciting additive manufacturing growth stories in Wales.
This week, the MTDCNC team travelled to Wales to visit Lunia 3D, where founders Yousef Ahmed and Ken Pearce sat down with Clinton Perry, Ian Carver, and Lyndsey Vickers to discuss their journey from hobbyist makers to commercial manufacturers, and why their latest investment marks a major turning point for the business.
At the centre of that next chapter is a new HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) machine supplied by Matsuura Machinery Ltd. A technology investment that will significantly expand Lunia 3D’s production capabilities and unlock new opportunities across multiple industries.
For Yousef and Ken, the move into industrial additive manufacturing was about more than simply increasing capacity. It was about creating a scalable, reliable manufacturing business capable of delivering production-grade components with speed, repeatability, and quality.
The addition of HP MJF technology gives Lunia 3D the ability to produce stronger, more accurate parts at higher volumes, while dramatically improving efficiency and turnaround times for customers.

The investment also positions Lunia 3D to become the largest dedicated 3D printing subcontract machine shop in Wales, a milestone made possible through the support and partnership of the team at Matsuura Machinery Ltd.
Joseph Bellis, Jon Porter, Ross Chapman, and the wider Matsuura team have worked closely with Lunia 3D throughout the process, helping guide the company into the next phase of its growth and supporting the transition into industrial-scale additive manufacturing.
During the visit, the MTDCNC team explored how the technology will allow Lunia 3D to diversify into new markets, take on more demanding production work, and continue building a business rooted in innovation, passion, and manufacturing expertise.

What makes the story even more compelling is that it reflects a growing trend within UK manufacturing. Passion-led businesses leveraging advanced technology to create highly agile, future-ready production environments.
From a simple fascination with 3D printing to a business now investing in world-class additive manufacturing equipment, Lunia 3D’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when entrepreneurial ambition meets the right technology and support network.
The full story, including exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from Lunia 3D, will be coming soon to MTDCNC.
