Sandvik Coromant launches diamond-coated router for advanced composite machining!
Sandvik Coromant has introduced the CoroMill Plura composite 2P350, a next-generation serrated router engineered to enhance reliability, productivity and tool life when machining abrasive composite materials. Designed specifically for ISO O materials, the tool addresses some of the most persistent challenges faced in composite machining.
Machining composites such as carbon fibre-reinforced materials often leads to issues like delamination, uncut fibres, vibration and rapid tool wear. The CoroMill Plura 2P350 tackles these problems with a patented dual-cutting mechanism that delivers a controlled, scissor-like cutting action. This design ensures stable engagement with the material, resulting in more predictable machining performance and improved surface quality.
A key innovation in the tool is its new O2AD diamond-coated grade. Developed using advanced chemical vapour deposition (CVD) technology, the coating provides strong adhesion to the substrate, enabling the tool to withstand the extreme abrasiveness of composite materials. This results in significantly extended tool life, with field tests showing up to 100% improvement compared to the previous O12M grade.
The tool is designed for versatility across a range of composite machining operations, including slotting, ramping and edge trimming. Its large flute volume supports efficient chip evacuation, allowing higher material removal rates without compromising part integrity. At the same time, its low-vibration cutting behaviour contributes to improved machining stability and better working conditions on the shop floor.
For aerospace manufacturers, where composite materials are widely used in components such as fuselage structures, wings, stabilizers, spars and frames, the tool offers clear advantages. Improved edge quality, reduced defects and longer tool life directly translate into higher productivity and lower operational costs.
Beyond aerospace, the CoroMill Plura 2P350 is also well-suited for industries such as automotive, defence, space and marine applications, where composite materials are increasingly adopted for their strength-to-weight advantages.
Overall, this latest innovation from Sandvik Coromant reflects the growing importance of specialized tooling in advanced materials machining. By combining diamond coating technology with an optimized cutting design, the CoroMill Plura composite 2P350 enables manufacturers to achieve greater efficiency, improved part quality and more consistent performance in demanding composite applications.
