Hamar Laser Instruments Inc. has introduced the L-703SP surface plate calibration system, a laser-based measurement solution designed to deliver high accuracy, repeatability and faster calibration for industrial inspection and metrology applications. The system is intended to simplify the calibration of surface plates while improving measurement speed and reliability compared with traditional techniques.

Surface plates are widely used in precision manufacturing environments as reference bases for inspection, assembly and measurement tasks. Ensuring that these plates maintain accurate flatness and alignment is critical for maintaining part quality and dimensional accuracy. The L-703SP system is engineered to streamline this calibration process through laser-based measurement technology combined with dedicated analysis software.

According to the company, the L-703SP system enables calibration processes that are approximately 30 to 40 percent faster than traditional electronic levels while delivering consistent and repeatable results across different technicians. The system is designed to be placed directly on surface plates, eliminating the complex floor-mounted setups typically required for measurement technologies such as autocollimators or laser interferometers.

At the core of the system is the L-703S spindle and straightness laser paired with the T-1297 three-axis wireless straightness target. The laser unit is compact and lightweight, allowing it to be easily positioned for measurement tasks while providing high-resolution straightness analysis. The system is suitable not only for surface plate calibration but also for measuring machine-tool guideways and spindle axis alignment in precision machining environments.

The T-1297 target incorporates a highly sensitive two-axis position-sensitive detector designed to deliver exceptional measurement accuracy. The detector provides a resolution of approximately 10 micro-inches (0.25 microns) and mechanical repeatability of ±10 micro-inches (±0.25 microns). This level of precision allows technicians to identify even minor deviations in flatness or alignment during calibration procedures.

The L-703SP system also includes dedicated calibration software known as Plane6. This Windows-based software platform guides users through a structured three-step calibration procedure, simplifying data collection and analysis. Built-in tolerance tables allow operators to quickly evaluate results and determine whether a surface plate meets required accuracy standards. The software can also generate full-color inspection reports that document measurement results for quality assurance records.

Additional hardware components included with the system support accurate setup and measurement. These include the A-703SP-LM laser mounting fixture, the A-703SP-SE straight edge and ruler, the A-1297-SP high-accuracy flatness-measuring base and the A-703SP-SE-CLT corner and midpoint locating tool. Together, these accessories help ensure proper alignment and positioning during calibration tasks.

By combining laser measurement technology with intuitive software and simplified setup procedures, the L-703SP system is designed to reduce calibration time while maintaining high levels of accuracy. The solution is particularly useful for manufacturers and metrology professionals seeking efficient and repeatable methods for maintaining precision measurement standards across machine tools and inspection equipment.
