Inside the World of Medical Manufacturing: Innovation on Show at SECO’s Inspiration Through Innovation Event
By Paul Jones
This week, the MTDCNC team attended SECO’s Inspiration Through Innovation event, which this time placed a spotlight firmly on the medical manufacturing sector. The event brought together advanced tooling, machining strategies, and real-world applications — demonstrating just how far precision engineering has evolved.
Precision Meets Complexity
Medical manufacturing presents some of the most demanding challenges in engineering. Components are often:
- Intricate in design
- Produced to extremely tight tolerances
- Manufactured from difficult materials
- Required to achieve exceptional surface finishes
At the event, these challenges were not only addressed — they were mastered.

Starrag’s Bumotec: A Complete Solution
One of the standout technologies on display came from Starrag, with their renowned Bumotec machine platform.
Designed as a multi-functional solution, the Bumotec combines milling, turning, and grinding capabilities within a single machine. This enables manufacturers to produce highly complex parts in one setup — reducing handling, improving accuracy, and increasing efficiency.
Even more impressive is the machine’s ability to run unmanned, delivering consistent, repeatable results on components where there is no margin for error.

Dental Applications in Focus
A key demonstration involved the machining of dental components — a perfect example of high-precision manufacturing in action.
These parts featured:
- Complex, irregular geometries
- Ultra-tight tolerances
- High-quality surface finishes critical for medical use
The results highlighted exactly why solutions like Bumotec are becoming essential within the medical sector.
Industry Insights from the Experts
During the visit, Paul spoke with Martin Büeler, Managing Director at Starrag, alongside Simon Dutton and Lee Scott, gaining valuable insights into how these technologies are shaping the future of medical manufacturing.
More to Come
This is just the beginning.
🎥 A full series of videos from the event will be released soon across MTDCNC, showcasing the machines, the people, and the innovations driving this sector forward.
