Babcock International’s £1.25 billion contract to construct five Type 31 frigates for the Royal Navy has reached significant milestones, bolstering more than 2,500 jobs across the UK. The programme, known as the Inspiration-class, represents a vital component of the Royal Navy’s fleet expansion.
HMS Active, the first vessel in the programme, was successfully rolled out from the build hall at Babcock’s Rosyth dockyard. This 5,700-tonne ship emerged from the purpose-built Venturer Building, marking a transition from structural assembly to the next phases of development. The key stages ahead include float-off, integration of combat systems, and subsequent sea trials.
In another development within the programme, HMS Bulldog, the fourth Type 31 frigate, began its construction phase. The ceremonial steel cutting event signified a crucial step in the production of this class of vessel, with four ships currently at different stages of build. The programme is progressing steadily as Babcock ramps up the production line.
Babcock’s Type 31 frigates are anticipated to play an essential role in the Royal Navy’s future capabilities, with these recent achievements underscoring the momentum and significance of the initiative.
