XtalPi Deploys Automated Formulation Testing System at BASF Shanghai Campus!
XtalPi Holdings Limited has completed the installation of an advanced automated formulation stability testing workstation at the Innovation Campus of BASF in Shanghai. The system integrates sample handling, laboratory testing and digital data tracking into a unified automated workflow, replacing time-intensive manual testing procedures.
BASF evaluates thousands of liquid formulations annually to assess long-term stability under varying environmental conditions. Traditional testing methods involved manual preparation, temperature-based observation and separate documentation of parameters such as pH values and viscosity. These processes required significant labor and carried risks of variability in data recording.
The newly installed workstation automates sample loading, barcode identification, imaging-based analysis and multiple laboratory measurements within a single continuous system. By consolidating these tasks, the platform enhances consistency, repeatability and overall testing reliability while reducing manual intervention.
The project underscores XtalPi’s capabilities in robotics-enabled research platforms designed for industrial-scale applications. Its modular system architecture allows rapid deployment and customization to suit specific production and research environments. The company has implemented similar automation platforms across drug discovery, advanced materials research and chemical synthesis, building expertise in high-precision data generation and intelligent experimentation.
Founded in 2015 by three physicists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, XtalPi combines quantum physics, artificial intelligence, high-performance cloud computing and standardized robotics to deliver digital R&D solutions. Its technology platforms support innovation in sectors including pharmaceuticals, materials science, agriculture, energy, specialty chemicals and cosmetics.
For BASF, the installation aligns with its focus on sustainable chemistry and efficient innovation. With approximately 112,000 employees worldwide, BASF aims to enable customers’ green transformation by balancing economic performance with environmental responsibility and social commitment.
The collaboration demonstrates how digital automation and AI-driven experimentation are reshaping formulation testing and industrial research, improving efficiency while strengthening data accuracy in large-scale R&D operations.
