Cummins Inc. has announced plans to expand its engine manufacturing plant in Darlington, County Durham. The expansion will involve constructing a new production facility adjacent to its Yarm Road location, a move that has gained backing from the Darlington Borough Council. The council has agreed to transfer land to facilitate the project, highlighting the local support for the initiative.
Cummins, a prominent name in power solutions, has been a part of the Darlington community since 1965. The existing plant employs approximately 1,500 individuals engaged in various roles, including engine assembly, exhaust aftertreatment manufacture, technical operations, and business support. The site’s reputation was further solidified when it celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, and recently, in 2024, it introduced a £13 million Powertrain Test Facility designed to innovate low- and zero-emission power solutions.
The Darlington plant has been a hub for engine development and related technologies from its inception. It manufactures products that are crucial to a host of sectors, such as commercial vehicles, buses, agriculture, construction, marine, and power generation, which are exported to 50 countries worldwide.
In tandem with the Darlington expansion, Cummins is also investing $50 million into its power systems manufacturing site in Daventry, Northamptonshire. This dual investment underscores Cummins’ commitment to enhancing its production capabilities and advancing power solutions on a global scale.
The expansion in Darlington not only signifies Cummins’ growth strategy but also reinforces its role in developing innovative technologies that cater to diverse industrial applications.
