Tarun Garg Becomes Hyundai India’s First Indian Managing Director and CEO, Marking a Historic Milestone!

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced the appointment of Tarun Garg as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026, pending shareholder approval. This historic appointment makes Garg the first Indian national to lead HMIL in its 29-year history, underscoring the company’s growing commitment to local leadership and market-driven strategy.

With an illustrious career spanning over 32 years in the automotive industry, Tarun Garg brings a wealth of experience across sales, marketing, distribution, product strategy, and financial management. Currently serving as HMIL’s Whole-time Director and COO, he has been instrumental in driving record-breaking sales, profitability, and India’s largest IPO in 2024. His leadership has reinforced Hyundai’s position as a front-runner in the Indian automotive market, particularly in the SUV segment.

During his tenure, Garg spearheaded several successful initiatives such as the MyHyundai app, the HSMART platform for dealers, and Hyundai’s direct-to-consumer electric vehicle channel, all of which have contributed to achieving an impressive 90 percent customer satisfaction rate. His customer-first philosophy and focus on digital transformation have helped Hyundai strengthen its brand image and operational efficiency across India.

Commenting on the appointment, José Muñoz, President & CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said, “Tarun’s appointment as the first Indian national to lead HMIL is a defining moment. He is a transformative leader who brings a progressive vision combined with a deep understanding of the Indian market.”

As the new MD and CEO, Garg has outlined his vision built on four strategic pillars — future strategy, market and people centricity, customer orientation, and strengthening the ‘Make in India’ initiative. His priorities include enhancing customer delight, building a resilient local supply chain, advancing next-generation mobility solutions, and positioning India as a global export hub for Hyundai. Additionally, he remains deeply committed to social responsibility through initiatives like “Samarth by Hyundai,” which supports inclusivity for people with disabilities.

Reflecting on his appointment, Garg said, “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me. Together with Hyundai’s talented employees, dealer partners, and suppliers, we will continue to strengthen HMIL’s legacy of customer loyalty and shape the future of mobility in India.”

Garg’s professional journey has been marked by consistent growth and strategic impact. He began his career with Maruti Suzuki, gaining leadership experience across sales, logistics, and marketing. An alumnus of Delhi Technological University and IIM Lucknow, he combines strong technical acumen with a deep understanding of business dynamics.

Under Tarun Garg’s leadership, Hyundai Motor India is poised to enter a new chapter of innovation, sustainability, and customer-centric growth — reaffirming its position as a key contributor to India’s evolving mobility landscape and its growing importance in Hyundai’s global operations.
