Kollmorgen, a global leader in motion control and automation systems, has expanded its innovative IC Ironcore DDL motor family with the introduction of a new high-voltage variant designed to support 400/480 VAC-powered applications. This new direct drive linear motor offers a significant upgrade from the previous 230 VAC models, providing machine builders with enhanced capabilities for demanding industrial tasks.

The new IC Ironcore DDL motor delivers a continuous force of up to 8,211 N, with peak forces reaching 13,448 N. This makes it ideal for industries that require rapid, precise movement of heavy loads, such as machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing, battery production, and industrial automation. Operating at higher bus voltages, the motor offers the same rated force at higher speeds, meeting the demands of high-performance applications where speed and precision are paramount.

The motor’s ability to operate with 400/480 VAC bus voltages offers several key advantages over lower voltage systems. Notably, it can eliminate the need for a transformer typically required for motors with lower voltage ratings, simplifying the system design. Additionally, by operating at higher voltages, the motor draws less current, which can reduce the size of the drive amplifiers and cables, leading to a more compact and efficient system. This reduced current draw can also result in smaller control cabinets with lower cooling requirements, further enhancing the system’s energy efficiency.

The IC Ironcore DDL motor also offers an optional water-cooling feature, which boosts the motor’s continuous force output by 40-60%. This option enables the use of smaller motor sizes without compromising performance, offering more compact and lightweight solutions. These improvements contribute to more sustainable machine designs that are easier to build, more affordable, and offer greater value to both OEMs and their customers.

Designed for global markets, the IC Ironcore DDL motor supports 230/400/480 VAC bus voltage compatibility, catering to the needs of customers in North America, Europe, and Asia. The motor is also UL and CE certified, as well as RoHS and REACH compliant, simplifying the approval process for international sales and ensuring seamless integration across diverse markets.

When paired with Kollmorgen’s AKD® or AKD2G servo drives, the IC Ironcore DDL motor offers exceptional precision, smoothness, and reliability. The AKD2G dual-axis servo drive, for instance, can synchronize two motors in applications like x/y tables, optimizing space in the control cabinet and enabling efficient, high-precision motion control.

With the addition of the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL motor, Kollmorgen continues to push the boundaries of linear motion technology, offering machine builders the ability to enhance their designs and differentiate their products in a competitive global marketplace. This new motor expands the company’s direct drive linear motor portfolio, providing a comprehensive range of solutions that meet the diverse needs of industrial applications.

Chris Cooper, Senior Director of Product Management at Kollmorgen, said, “We’re excited to significantly expand the range, power, and versatility of our direct drive linear motor portfolio with the addition of the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL. This latest product enables machine builders to reach new levels of linear motion performance, differentiating their designs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”
