Magna, a global leader in automotive technology solutions, announced the award of a significant supply contract from a major European Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for its newly launched Dual Clutch Transmission Eco (DCT Eco) system. This contract represents Magna’s first high-volume agreement for the DCT Eco, highlighting the increasing demand for efficient and flexible powertrain solutions in regions with stringent emission regulations. The DCT Eco system, initially engineered for conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, also facilitates a seamless transition to hybrid applications with minimal platform adjustments, offering OEMs a cost-effective pathway to hybridization.
The DCT Eco features a modular structure that empowers car manufacturers to scale their powertrains from traditional ICE setups to hybrid configurations using the same platform. This design approach eliminates the substantial costs typically associated with vehicle redesigns. Additionally, the DCT Eco boasts an optimized torque-to-weight ratio, enhancing fuel efficiency and significantly reducing CO₂ emissions across various vehicle classes, particularly within the competitive B- and C-segments. As the global demand for hybrid vehicles continues to surge, especially in Europe, the flexibility and scalability of the DCT Eco position Magna as an indispensable partner for automakers striving to enhance their environmental sustainability.
Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, emphasized the critical role of versatile solutions in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. “The DCT Eco family offers our customers a cost-efficient and scalable option to meet global emission targets without compromising performance or incurring high development costs.” Ilunga added, “Our approach supports a wide range of hybrid configurations, from 48V mild hybrids to more robust 400V solutions, paving the way for both entry-level and high-performance hybrid vehicles.” This strategic flexibility not only meets the diverse needs of OEMs but also reinforces Magna’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.
Following a successful initial rollout in South American vehicle models, the DCT Eco will commence integration into European models in 2025. This expansion aligns with the automaker’s efforts to reduce emissions and comply with European Union (EU) targets. Magna’s achievement in securing this contract underscores the company’s dedication to providing versatile and scalable transmission solutions that support the industry’s shift toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility options.
The DCT Eco system’s ability to deliver high performance while maintaining cost-effectiveness makes it a pivotal addition to Magna’s product portfolio. By enabling OEMs to enhance their powertrain capabilities without the need for extensive redesigns, Magna not only supports their clients’ sustainability goals but also contributes to the broader effort of reducing the automotive sector’s environmental impact.
