ZF Begins Local Production of Electric Park Brake Systems in India, Aligning with Nation’s EV and Safety Push!

German automotive technology giant ZF has officially launched local manufacturing of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India, marking a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to support the country’s growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and advanced safety landscape. The EPB units will be deployed in a newly developed domestic EV platform, as part of a long-term supply agreement with an Indian automaker.

This marks the first local rollout of ZF’s EPB system for passenger vehicles in India, as the company deepens its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets. Over the next several years, thousands of units are expected to be delivered under this agreement, reinforcing ZF’s commitment to “Make in India” and the government’s push for localized, eco-friendly mobility solutions.

The EPB system replaces traditional handbrake levers and cables with a smart, electronically controlled mechanism. It offers a host of benefits, including:

  • Reduced mechanical drag, cabin noise, and vibrations
  • Enhanced safety functions, such as dynamic braking and emergency braking on two wheels
  • Real-time brake pad wear monitoring, improving service accuracy and vehicle reliability
  • Push-button activation from the dashboard, seamlessly integrated into the main braking system

Designed for flexibility, ZF’s EPB can be adapted across various platforms—from compact passenger cars to light-duty commercial vehicles, enabling broad application across India’s evolving automotive landscape.

Speaking on the development, Akash Passey, President of ZF India, commented:

“The new EPB production line reflects ZF’s commitment to the Indian market. We aim to meet local demands while empowering Indian automakers to deliver globally competitive, future-ready vehicles.”

Globally, ZF’s EPB systems are installed on over 250 million wheels, demonstrating the company’s strong legacy in braking innovation. With €46.6 billion in revenue in 2023, 162 manufacturing sites in 31 countries, and nearly 169,000 employees, ZF continues to be a major force in mobility systems for passenger vehicles, commercial transport, and industrial applications.

This local production initiative not only brings cutting-edge braking technology to India but also aligns with the country’s broader ambitions for electric mobility, enhanced vehicle safety, and indigenized manufacturing. It positions ZF as a key enabler in India’s transition to a smarter, safer, and more sustainable automotive future.
