Tata Motors Launches Altroz iCNG AMT, India’s First Premium Hatchback with CNG and Automatic Transmission!
Tata Motors has expanded its premium hatchback portfolio with the launch of the Altroz iCNG equipped with an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission), making it the first premium hatchback in India to combine a CNG powertrain with automatic transmission technology. The launch aims to address growing customer demand for fuel-efficient vehicles that also offer greater driving convenience and everyday practicality.
The new Tata Altroz iCNG AMT has been introduced at a starting price of ₹8.69 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), further strengthening the Altroz lineup, which already offers multiple fuel and transmission options. The addition of AMT technology to the iCNG range reflects Tata Motors’ strategy of expanding customer choice while responding to the increasing popularity of CNG-powered vehicles in India.
According to the company, the Altroz iCNG AMT combines the cost-saving benefits of compressed natural gas with the ease and comfort of automatic driving, making it particularly attractive for urban commuters and daily-use customers seeking lower running costs without sacrificing convenience.
A major highlight of the new model is Tata Motors’ twin-cylinder iCNG technology, which is designed to overcome one of the common limitations associated with conventional CNG vehicles — reduced boot space. Unlike traditional single-cylinder CNG systems that occupy a large portion of the luggage compartment, the twin-cylinder layout allows the Altroz to retain more usable cargo space while integrating the CNG system more efficiently within the vehicle architecture.
The Altroz iCNG AMT will be available across several variants, including Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative S and Accomplished S. Pricing for the range extends up to ₹10.76 lakh depending on the selected variant and features.
The launch comes at a time when demand for CNG-powered passenger vehicles continues to rise rapidly across India. Tata Motors noted that the growth of the CNG segment is no longer limited to traditional metropolitan markets and is now expanding into newer regions as customers increasingly prioritize fuel economy and lower ownership costs.
Vivek Srivatsa stated that the Altroz has consistently established benchmarks in the premium hatchback segment through its focus on design, safety and diverse powertrain offerings. He highlighted that CNG has emerged as the fastest-growing fuel category in the country, with penetration levels reaching 19 percent in FY25 and expected to rise to 22 percent in FY26.
Srivatsa also emphasized that the addition of AMT technology to the iCNG lineup directly addresses a growing consumer preference for greater driving convenience in CNG vehicles. By combining automatic transmission with fuel-efficient CNG technology, Tata Motors aims to deliver a balance of efficiency, comfort, practicality and premium driving experience.
The launch also reflects broader trends within the Indian automotive market, where manufacturers are increasingly diversifying powertrain offerings to cater to varying consumer needs while navigating evolving fuel preferences and emissions regulations. CNG vehicles, in particular, are witnessing strong demand due to lower operating costs and expanding fuel infrastructure across the country.
The Altroz iCNG AMT strengthens Tata Motors’ position in the premium hatchback segment by offering a unique combination of advanced fuel technology, automatic convenience and practical packaging. It also highlights the company’s continued focus on innovation and customer-centric product development within India’s rapidly evolving passenger vehicle market.
As the shift toward alternative fuel solutions accelerates, products like the Altroz iCNG AMT are expected to play a significant role in bridging affordability, efficiency and modern driving convenience for Indian consumers.
