In a strategic move to expand its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, Stellantis has announced plans to introduce Leapmotor electric vehicles from its Chinese joint venture partner into the Indian market. This partnership aligns with Stellantis’ long-term commitment to sustainability and innovation, as it works to strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
While Stellantis has not yet confirmed a specific launch timeline for the Leapmotor EVs in India, the decision signifies an important step toward bolstering its local footprint in the country. Stellantis already has established brands in India, including Jeep and Citroën, and aims to further diversify its offerings to cater to the increasing demand for clean and sustainable mobility solutions.
Shailesh Hazela, CEO and Managing Director of Stellantis India, expressed excitement about the move, stating, “We are thrilled to bring Leapmotor to India as part of our continued commitment to this key market. With our deep understanding of the Indian automotive space, we see strong potential for premium electric vehicles tailored to the evolving needs of Indian consumers.” Hazela also highlighted Leapmotor’s commitment to advanced technology, build quality, and customer-focused design, which sets the brand apart globally.
Leapmotor, known for its focus on clean mobility, offers high-tech electric vehicles with a combination of modern comfort and eco-friendly performance. The company’s vehicles are designed to meet the growing demand for premium, efficient, and sustainable transport options in markets like India.
By bringing Leapmotor EVs to India, Stellantis aims to tap into the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle sector. The focus will be on offering vehicles that integrate advanced technology, affordable pricing, and improved user experiences, making EVs more accessible to Indian consumers.
Last year, Stellantis indicated that it could leverage its existing manufacturing facilities in India to produce Leapmotor EVs locally. This move could help mitigate the challenges posed by high import duties, which often make foreign-made electric vehicles more expensive in the Indian market. Local production would allow Stellantis to offer more competitively priced vehicles while also contributing to the Indian government’s push for local manufacturing in the electric mobility space.
As part of its broader expansion strategy, Leapmotor will initially focus on markets like Australia and New Zealand, with India being a key next step. This regional approach highlights the potential of the Indian market for premium electric vehicles, as well as the growing interest in sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
Stellantis, a global leader in the automotive industry, continues to prioritize clean and sustainable mobility solutions across its vast portfolio of iconic brands, which includes Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Jeep, Maserati, Peugeot, and more. The introduction of Leapmotor EVs in India aligns with the company’s global sustainability goals and underscores its focus on offering safe, accessible, and eco-friendly mobility solutions to a broader audience.
With the government of India actively promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, Stellantis’ venture into the EV space with Leapmotor represents a significant shift toward cleaner, more efficient transportation in the country. The collaboration promises to meet the rising demand for premium electric vehicles in India and marks a step forward in the automotive giant’s mission to lead the global shift towards sustainable mobility.
As the Indian automotive sector continues to evolve, Stellantis’ introduction of Leapmotor EVs sets the stage for a future of innovative, clean mobility solutions in one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
