Škoda Auto has marked a major milestone—25 years of operations in India, solidifying its position as a key player in the country’s automotive landscape. The company entered the Indian market in January 2000, establishing a manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad)—the first Volkswagen Group brand to do so. The production of the Škoda Octavia in India was the first step in a journey that has now positioned India as a strategic hub for Škoda’s global expansion. Today, the brand’s influence extends beyond India, contributing to its growth in ASEAN, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand.
Škoda Auto has invested significantly in India, developing three models specifically designed for the Indian market—the Kushaq, Slavia, and the newly launched Kylaq compact SUV. These vehicles are built on the MQB A0-IN platform, a locally adapted Volkswagen architecture, ensuring up to 95% localization. The Kushaq, launched in 2021, was the first model under this initiative, demonstrating the company’s commitment to strengthening India’s automotive ecosystem.
The company has also expanded its customer touchpoints by 35% over the past two years, making Škoda’s vehicles more accessible to Indian consumers. With a strong local production network and strategic investments, Škoda is further establishing itself as a long-term player in the Indian market.
Sustainability is at the core of Škoda Auto’s operations in India. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant is now fully powered by green energy, while the Pune facility has expanded its photovoltaic system, covering 30% of its energy needs. Looking ahead, Škoda aims to achieve CO₂-neutrality across all its Indian manufacturing plants by 2030, aligning with global sustainability initiatives.
Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto, highlighted the significance of India in the company’s expansion strategy, stating:
“India has become a vital part of our global strategy, helping us expand in key markets. The progress made in the last 25 years demonstrates the power of innovation and local expertise. Our commitment to sustainable growth and creating value for our customers and employees continues to be at the heart of our success.”
Škoda Auto’s vehicles have also gained industry recognition, with the Slavia earning the “Sedan of the Year” award in 2022 and the Kylaq generating strong demand upon its launch. Additionally, Škoda has invested in local economic growth, supporting education, infrastructure projects, and employment opportunities in the region.
As Škoda continues to expand and invest in India, it remains a key player in Volkswagen Group’s regional strategy. The company is committed to strengthening its manufacturing presence, enhancing local innovation, and driving sustainability efforts, ensuring long-term success in India’s dynamic automotive market.
With a 25-year legacy of innovation, localization, and sustainability, Škoda Auto is poised to shape the future of mobility in India for years to come.
