Mehru Electrical Joins Forces with Hyosung Group to Pioneer GIS Instrument Transformer Technology in India!

In a landmark development for India’s electrical equipment sector, Mehru Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Quality Power Electrical Equipments Ltd (QPEEL), has signed a strategic co-development agreement with Hyosung T&D India Private Limited, the Indian arm of South Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation. This collaboration is set to transform the country’s role in the global market by enabling the joint development of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) instrument transformers, a highly advanced and specialized technology.

For Mehru, the partnership represents a significant breakthrough. It positions the company as one of the first Indian manufacturers to co-develop GIS instrument transformer technology, a domain historically dominated by foreign suppliers. By combining Mehru’s proven expertise in high-voltage instrument transformers with Hyosung’s global leadership in compact and eco-friendly GIS solutions, the agreement promises to deliver world-class products designed and manufactured in India for both domestic and international markets.

This initiative aligns directly with the Indian government’s “Make in India” mission, which emphasizes reducing dependence on imports and strengthening local capabilities in advanced manufacturing. For decades, India has relied heavily on GIS imports from Europe, China, and Japan. The collaboration with Hyosung signals a decisive shift, as it not only supports import substitution but also builds India’s credibility as a global exporter in the rapidly growing GIS market segment.

According to Bharanidharan Pandyan, Joint Managing Director of QPEEL, the agreement is more than just a business milestone—it is a step toward greater self-reliance. He explained that introducing advanced GIS technology into Indian manufacturing will create new opportunities for exports, support infrastructure development, and place India on the global map of transmission and distribution innovation.

The significance of this partnership becomes even clearer when seen against the backdrop of the global GIS market, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7–8% through 2030. With advantages such as reduced footprint, enhanced safety, and a move toward eco-friendly alternatives to SF₆ gas, GIS technology is increasingly being adopted for metro systems, renewable energy projects, offshore wind farms, urban substations, and large-scale industrial facilities. By entering this space, Mehru not only diversifies its product portfolio beyond oil-filled and dry-type transformers but also positions itself to serve high-demand applications in emerging power infrastructure projects worldwide.

The agreement includes the co-development of GIS instrument transformers with production and testing processes aligned to stringent IEC and IEEE international standards. This ensures that the jointly developed products will meet global benchmarks for performance, reliability, and sustainability. The first batch of GIS instrument transformers is expected to be completed and introduced within the next 12 months, creating a new chapter in India’s journey toward technological leadership in power equipment manufacturing.

Mehru’s parent company, QPEEL, already operates as a publicly listed multinational with installations across more than 100 countries. With a strong reputation for providing high-voltage solutions up to 765 kV, QPEEL has consistently supported utilities and industries in building energy-efficient and resilient grids. Its facilities, certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO/IEC 17025 standards, provide a solid foundation for this new venture with Hyosung.

By bridging global expertise with Indian manufacturing excellence, the Mehru-Hyosung partnership is not just a technological advancement—it is a strategic leap that strengthens India’s role in the global GIS value chain and accelerates the nation’s progress toward energy independence and innovation leadership.
