Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has achieved a significant milestone in its manufacturing journey with the rollout of the three-millionth vehicle from its Chakan manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. The landmark vehicle is the BE 6, the company’s flagship electric SUV, underscoring the plant’s growing importance as a production hub for both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and next-generation electric mobility solutions.

Since commencing operations in December 2009, the Chakan facility has evolved into one of Mahindra’s most advanced manufacturing complexes, playing a central role in the company’s domestic and global automotive operations. The latest achievement highlights not only the plant’s production capabilities but also the increasing demand for Mahindra’s expanding portfolio of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and electric SUVs.

A key indicator of the facility’s growing manufacturing efficiency is the pace at which production milestones have been achieved. While the plant required 107 months to manufacture its first one million vehicles, it produced its most recent one million units in just 27 months. This dramatic acceleration reflects continuous investments in manufacturing technology, process optimisation, capacity expansion, and strong market demand across multiple vehicle segments.

Commenting on the milestone, R. Velusamy, President – Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said the rollout of the three-millionth vehicle represents another important chapter in the company’s manufacturing journey. He noted that the progressively shorter production cycles demonstrate the trust customers have placed in the Mahindra brand and reflect the dedication of employees, suppliers, dealers, and business partners. According to Velusamy, the Chakan plant combines advanced manufacturing technologies with lean production principles to deliver high levels of quality, operational flexibility, and manufacturing efficiency while supporting the company’s long-term growth strategy.

Spread across approximately 657 acres, the Chakan manufacturing complex produces 19 vehicle models and more than 450 variants, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and electric SUVs. The facility has been designed around flexible manufacturing principles, enabling multiple vehicle platforms to be assembled on common production lines. This flexibility allows Mahindra to respond quickly to changing customer preferences and evolving market demand while maximising production efficiency.

The plant incorporates a wide range of advanced manufacturing technologies aligned with Industry 4.0 principles. Digital manufacturing systems integrate artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, and end-to-end digital traceability to improve productivity, enhance quality control, and optimise operational performance. Approximately 1,500 industrial robots are deployed across the facility, with the body shop achieving more than 98 percent automation. Automated material handling systems, robotic painting operations, AI-enabled safety monitoring, and real-time quality inspection further contribute to consistent manufacturing excellence and improved production efficiency.

Sustainability has become an integral part of operations at the Chakan plant. More than half of the facility’s total energy requirements are met through renewable energy sources, while Mahindra’s electric vehicle manufacturing operations at the site are powered entirely by renewable electricity. These initiatives form part of the company’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable manufacturing practices.

The facility has also implemented comprehensive environmental management programmes focused on responsible resource utilisation. Through extensive rainwater harvesting systems and groundwater recharge initiatives, the plant has achieved water-positive status by replenishing more water than it consumes. In addition, the facility has earned Zero Waste to Landfill certification, reflecting its commitment to responsible waste management, resource recovery, and circular economy practices. Continuous efforts to improve energy productivity further reinforce Mahindra’s long-term sustainability objectives.

The rollout of the three-millionth vehicle demonstrates Mahindra’s growing manufacturing strength at a time when the automotive industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by electrification, digitalisation, and smart manufacturing technologies. The Chakan facility serves as a benchmark for modern automotive production by combining flexible manufacturing, advanced automation, digital technologies, and sustainable operations within a single integrated manufacturing ecosystem.

As Mahindra continues to expand its portfolio of conventional and electric vehicles, the Chakan plant will remain a cornerstone of the company’s manufacturing strategy. Its ability to rapidly scale production while maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency, and sustainability positions it to support Mahindra’s future growth in both domestic and international automotive markets.
