Horn Expands Slot Broaching System for Small Diameters with New Type 117 Inserts!
Paul Horn GmbH has expanded its slot broaching system with the introduction of Type 117 inserts, designed for internal diameters starting from 9 mm. The new development enhances capability in small-diameter applications while offering improved sustainability and cost efficiency.
A key highlight of the Type 117 insert range is its reduced carbide content, which lowers material usage and contributes to more sustainable tooling solutions. At the same time, the design delivers a lower cost per cutting edge, making it an attractive option for manufacturers seeking both performance and economic benefits. To support this innovation, Horn developed a dedicated carbide blank specifically engineered for the 117 insert family.
The system is suitable for a wide range of internal broaching operations, including gear broaching, polygonal broaching, and keyway broaching. Compared to traditional solid carbide broaching tools, the system offers a notable advantage through its tool shank design, which enables the machining of longer and deeper grooves. This expands its usability across more complex and demanding applications.
Tool lengths are available in 20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm, providing flexibility for different machining requirements. All variants are equipped with internal coolant delivery directed precisely at the cutting zone, improving chip evacuation, reducing heat, and enhancing tool life. Toolholder shanks are offered in 16 mm and 20 mm diameters, and Horn also provides specialised holders compatible with broaching units from various machine manufacturers.
The inserts are available in multiple configurations to accommodate diverse application needs, ensuring adaptability across industries and machining setups. Despite their compact size, the development of the Type 117 inserts required advanced manufacturing and metrology solutions.
According to Andreas Härle, the small dimensions of the inserts demanded significant innovation in production processes, including handling, fixture grinding, and measurement systems. These advancements have enabled Horn to deliver high precision and reliability even in miniature tooling applications.
Overall, the expansion of the slot broaching system with Type 117 inserts reflects Horn’s focus on combining precision engineering with sustainability and cost efficiency, providing manufacturers with a versatile solution for small-diameter internal broaching operations.
