Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has announced the appointment of Ravi K as its 22nd Chairman and Managing Director, effective immediately. He succeeds D K Sunil, who retired on April 30 after a notable tenure leading the organisation.

Ravi K brings over three decades of experience across aerospace, defence manufacturing, and electronics, making him one of the most seasoned leaders within HAL’s leadership pipeline. Prior to his elevation, he served as Director (Operations), where he played a key role in driving strategic initiatives and strengthening operational performance, contributing to HAL’s achievement of Maharatna status.

In his new role, Ravi K has outlined a clear vision focused on enhancing HAL’s global competitiveness in aerospace and defence. His priorities include accelerating innovation, integrating emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, improving operational efficiency, and fostering a people-centric organisational culture. These focus areas are expected to guide HAL through its next phase of growth as it expands both domestic and international opportunities.

Throughout his career at HAL, Ravi K has held several critical leadership roles, including Executive Director and General Manager of the LCA Tejas Division, as well as Executive Director (Corporate Planning). He has been instrumental in securing major defence contracts, including orders for 180 HAL Tejas fighter jets for the Indian Air Force and 156 LCH Prachand helicopters for the Indian Army and Air Force—projects that are central to India’s defence modernisation and self-reliance initiatives.

He is widely recognised for his contributions to the operational deployment and serviceability of the Tejas fleet. His initiatives focused on improving customer support, including the introduction of streamlined communication systems with Air Force bases and the implementation of a Single Point of Contact model, ensuring faster response times and enhanced operational readiness.

Ravi K has also played a pivotal role in advancing indigenous manufacturing capabilities within the Tejas programme. By increasing local content and expanding production capacity—particularly at HAL’s Nashik facility—he has contributed to building a more resilient domestic aerospace ecosystem. His efforts to collaborate with private sector partners for key assemblies, such as fuselage manufacturing, have further strengthened India’s defence manufacturing base.

Beyond defence programmes, he has supported HAL’s diversification into civil manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, opening new revenue streams and broadening the company’s market reach. This diversification is expected to play an important role in sustaining long-term growth and reducing dependence on traditional defence contracts.

Academically, Ravi K holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Malnad College of Engineering, Karnataka, and has completed advanced management education at IIM Ahmedabad and IAS Toulouse, France. He also serves as a Nominee Director on the board of Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Ltd., reflecting his continued involvement in strategic aerospace initiatives.

With strong operational experience, a proven track record in programme execution, and a focus on innovation and self-reliance, Ravi K’s appointment signals HAL’s intent to further strengthen its position as a leading global aerospace and defence enterprise.
