Gleason Corporation Celebrates 160 Years of Innovation and Excellence in Gear Technology

This year marks a significant milestone for Gleason Corporation, celebrating 160 years of leadership in gear technology. Founded in 1865 by William Gleason, the company has evolved from a small workshop into a global pioneer, offering a comprehensive range of solutions that include design software, manufacturing and metrology equipment, tooling, aftermarket services, and extensive training programs.

Gleason’s journey began with the invention of the first bevel gear planer in 1874, a breakthrough that revolutionized the gear manufacturing industry and set the stage for many subsequent innovations. Over the years, Gleason has been at the forefront of several technological milestones, contributing to major historical achievements. The company’s products were integral in the construction of the Panama Canal in 1903, the invention of the Spiral Bevel Gear in 1913, and the development of the hypoid gear shortly thereafter. During World War II, Gleason provided critical gear components for the Sherman tank, and the company’s Curvic couplings and geared components played a pivotal role in the Apollo space missions. Gleason also introduced breakthrough technologies like the Phoenix and Genesis Machine series, solidifying its position as an industry leader.

In addition to its organic growth, Gleason has expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, further enhancing its product offerings and geographic reach. These include the acquisition of Hurth Maschinen und Werkzeuge in Munich, the Hermann Pfauter Group in Ludwigsburg, and significant additions to its portfolio, such as metrology systems, automation solutions, and plastic gears. The company now operates in major industrial hubs worldwide, with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Suzhou (China) and Bangalore (India).

One of the most significant milestones in Gleason’s history came in 2017, when the company acquired Swiss KISSsoft AG, a leader in gear design and simulation software. This strategic move made Gleason the first company in the industry to combine design, manufacturing, and metrology elements across virtually all gear types into a comprehensive ‘gear technology ecosystem’.
