FANUC Introduces Lightweight CRX-3iA Cobot to Bring Portable Automation to High-Mix Manufacturing Environments!
As manufacturers continue to seek greater flexibility, efficiency, and adaptability in their production processes, automation providers are responding with solutions designed to meet the demands of modern manufacturing. Addressing this need, FANUC America has expanded its collaborative robot portfolio with the launch of the CRX-3iA, a lightweight and highly portable cobot engineered to automate a wide range of tasks across dynamic production environments.
Designed specifically for high-mix, low-volume operations, the CRX-3iA offers manufacturers the ability to deploy automation wherever it is needed. Weighing just 11 kilograms (24 pounds), the cobot can be easily carried and repositioned by a single operator, making it an ideal solution for facilities that require frequent workflow changes or temporary automation setups. This portability enables manufacturers to automate tasks without the need for permanent installations, helping them respond quickly to changing production requirements.
The CRX-3iA features a payload capacity of 3 kilograms and a reach of 692 millimeters, making it suitable for a variety of industrial applications. Whether handling parts, performing small assembly operations, driving screws, positioning tools, conducting inspections, or supporting welding processes, the cobot is designed to deliver reliable performance while maintaining ease of use.
One of the key advantages of the CRX-3iA is its flexibility in installation. The robot supports magnetic base mounting and can be installed on walls or ceilings with minimal effort. FANUC’s automatic angle detection technology eliminates the need for manual configuration during installation, significantly reducing setup time and allowing operators to get the system running quickly. This capability is particularly valuable in manufacturing environments where production cells are frequently reconfigured to accommodate different products and processes.
For welding applications, the CRX-3iA introduces additional benefits that further enhance productivity. Manufacturers can manually move the cobot to the welding location and quickly begin operations without requiring precise robot positioning. Advanced features such as touch sensing, automatic weld point detection, and automated path generation help streamline programming and setup activities. As a result, companies can reduce downtime and accelerate deployment, making robotic welding more accessible for smaller production runs and specialized jobs.
The introduction of the CRX-3iA reflects a growing trend toward portable and flexible automation solutions that can support manufacturers facing labor shortages, increasing customization demands, and the need for greater operational agility. Rather than investing in fixed automation systems that may only serve a single application, companies can now leverage mobile collaborative robots capable of supporting multiple tasks across different workstations.
In addition to unveiling the CRX-3iA, FANUC is also introducing new capabilities across its entire CRX collaborative robot family. These enhancements are designed to expand the range of applications supported by CRX cobots, from high-speed fastening and palletizing operations to advanced welding and coordinated multi-robot tasks. By broadening the functionality of its collaborative robotics lineup, FANUC aims to provide manufacturers with scalable automation solutions that can support both small-batch production and large-scale manufacturing operations.
As the manufacturing sector continues its transition toward smarter and more flexible production models, innovations such as the CRX-3iA demonstrate how collaborative robotics can help businesses improve efficiency, maximize workforce productivity, and adapt quickly to evolving market demands.
