Calderys Builds India’s Next Eco-Smart Industrial Hub in Odisha!

Calderys has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to set new sustainability standards in the industrial sector with the establishment of its CAPES (Calderys Advanced Plant for Eco-Smart Solutions) plant in Odisha. This next-generation facility is dedicated to greener production practices that not only aim to reduce the environmental footprint of Calderys operations but also address the growing demand in India’s refractories and steel casting fluxes market.

The CAPES plant reflects Calderys’ commitment to sustainability at every level of operation. One of the most ambitious goals for the facility is to source 20 percent of its energy from solar power within the next five years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to minimize the plant’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources, reducing its overall carbon footprint. Furthermore, the plant operates with a zero effluent discharge policy by recycling all wastewater on-site, ensuring that no harmful waste is released into local water sources.

To protect and enhance local water resources, Calderys is installing 95 groundwater recharge pits around the facility. These measures will help maintain the health of surrounding ecosystems and contribute to long-term water sustainability in the region. Additionally, a significant environmental initiative at CAPES is the development of a green belt aimed at covering 33 percent of the area with trees. Already, 800 trees have been planted, with plans to increase the number to 2,000, enhancing biodiversity and helping absorb carbon emissions.

In addition to its water and energy initiatives, CAPES places a high priority on air quality, ensuring that its operations exceed standard environmental protections. With the installation of advanced dust and emission control systems, the plant will maintain air quality five times cleaner than typical refractory plants, further promoting the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. By adopting a circular economy approach, CAPES uses scrap and recycled materials in its production processes, significantly reducing waste while improving resource efficiency.

Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President at Calderys, emphasized the company’s broader vision for sustainability, saying, “At Calderys, sustainability is not a standalone initiative but is embedded into every aspect of our operations. The CAPES plant in Odisha reflects our vision of future-ready manufacturing, where innovation and responsibility go hand-in-hand. Our environmental measures are a commitment not just to the planet, but also to the communities and generations we serve, and they support India’s national decarbonisation goals.”

With CAPES, Calderys is not only advancing its sustainability initiatives but also contributing to India’s industrial growth by adopting cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly practices. By blending innovation with environmental care, Calderys is setting an example for future industrial facilities in India, helping the country meet both national and global sustainability targets. This initiative also supports India’s broader decarbonisation goals, reinforcing Calderys’ commitment to responsible and sustainable industrial growth.

The CAPES plant is set to be a model for eco-smart manufacturing in India, aligning with the global push towards greener industries and reflecting Calderys’ leadership in creating more sustainable industrial solutions.
