BYD Unveils Blade Battery, Aiming to Set New Benchmark in EV Safety!

In a groundbreaking development for electric vehicle (EV) technology, BYD has officially unveiled its Blade Battery, an innovation designed to significantly enhance the safety standards of electric vehicle batteries. During an online event titled “The Blade Battery – Unsheathed to Safeguard the World”, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing long-standing safety concerns within battery technology, marking a major milestone in the evolution of EVs.

A highlight of the launch event was the demonstration of the nail penetration test, one of the most rigorous safety evaluations in the industry. The Blade Battery passed this demanding test with flying colors—remaining intact without emitting smoke or flames. Its surface temperature remained between 30°C and 60°C, in stark contrast to traditional ternary lithium batteries, which exceeded 500°C and caught fire under similar conditions. This dramatic difference in performance underscores the Blade Battery’s potential to revolutionize safety in the EV sector.

The Blade Battery is a product of years of research and development, built with an innovative design that arranges individual cells in a compact array, directly inserted into the battery pack. This configuration increases the space utilization by over 50% compared to standard lithium iron phosphate batteries, making it a more efficient and safer option for EV manufacturers.

Further strengthening its safety credentials, the Blade Battery underwent a series of extreme stress tests, showcasing its resilience and safety under the harshest conditions. The battery was subjected to conditions including crushing, bending, exposure to 300°C temperatures, and even being overcharged by 260%—all without causing a fire or explosion. These tests illustrate the Blade Battery’s superior thermal stability, high resistance to thermal reactions, and minimal heat release, key factors that contribute to its lower fire risk compared to traditional batteries.

In addition to demonstrating the Blade Battery’s advanced safety features, He Long, Vice President of BYD and Chairman of FinDreams Battery Co., took the opportunity to criticize the industry’s narrow focus on increasing driving range at the expense of battery safety. He pointed out that the relentless pursuit of higher energy density has often led to compromises in safety, with many manufacturers prioritizing range over security. BYD’s Blade Battery aims to shift the focus back to safety, ensuring that vehicles are not only more efficient but also safer for consumers.

Professor Ouyang Minggao, a distinguished member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Tsinghua University expert, also provided insight into the advantages of the Blade Battery. According to Ouyang, the Blade Battery offers superior performance in both safety and energy efficiency—making it a standout choice for EV applications. This dual advantage enables the battery to be a game-changer in the global electric mobility sector, where safety and sustainability are becoming paramount.

The unveiling of the Blade Battery positions BYD at the forefront of the clean energy revolution, reaffirming its commitment to the sustainable future of transportation. With this innovative technology, BYD not only advances EV safety but also sets a new standard for the entire industry to follow, potentially shaping the future of electric mobility for years to come.

As the EV industry accelerates toward wider adoption, BYD’s Blade Battery represents a critical leap forward in ensuring that future electric vehicles are not only powerful and efficient but also safe—providing consumers with the confidence they need to embrace the next generation of sustainable transportation.
