AirAsia Orders Up to 150 Airbus A220 Aircraft in Landmark Deal for Canadian Aerospace Manufacturing!
AirAsia has placed a major order for up to 150 A220-300 aircraft from Airbus, marking the largest single firm order in the history of the A220 programme. The agreement also pushes total firm orders for the aircraft family beyond the 1,000-unit milestone, highlighting growing global demand for next-generation narrow-body aircraft.
The announcement was made at Airbus’ Mirabel facility in Mirabel, where the A220 aircraft is manufactured. The event was attended by senior industry and government leaders, including Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and advisor to AirAsia Group, Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette.
The order represents a strategic fleet expansion for AirAsia and introduces the airline as a new A220 customer. The aircraft will support the company’s evolving network strategy by enabling expansion across ASEAN markets as well as into Central Asia and other emerging routes. The A220’s combination of fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and long-range capability makes it particularly suited for regional and medium-haul operations.
As part of the agreement, AirAsia will become the launch customer for a new 160-seat cabin configuration of the A220-300. The higher-capacity layout is enabled through the addition of an extra overwing exit on each side of the aircraft, allowing airlines to optimise passenger capacity while maintaining operational efficiency.
The A220 is designed for the 100- to 160-seat market and offers a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles. Its performance characteristics make it ideal for opening new point-to-point routes while also supporting efficient operations on existing regional networks. For AirAsia, the aircraft will complement its existing Airbus fleet and allow larger aircraft to be deployed on longer international routes.
Beyond operational benefits, the order is also significant for Canadian aerospace manufacturing. The A220 programme is a key part of Canada’s aviation sector, with production centered in Quebec. The large-scale order strengthens long-term production visibility for the Mirabel facility and reinforces Canada’s role in the global aerospace supply chain.
Sustainability is another important aspect of the aircraft programme. The A220 is currently capable of operating with up to 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and Airbus aims to achieve full 100 percent SAF capability by 2030. This aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce aviation emissions and support more sustainable air travel.
As of March 2026, more than 500 A220 aircraft had already been delivered to operators worldwide, reflecting the programme’s increasing global adoption. AirAsia’s order further strengthens the aircraft’s market position and demonstrates continued confidence in efficient, next-generation aircraft platforms for future airline growth.
