Air Liquide has unveiled plans for a major investment exceeding $350 million to expand its industrial gas production capabilities in Louisiana, reinforcing its role in supporting the transition toward lower-carbon manufacturing. The expansion is tied to a long-term supply agreement with Hyundai-Posco Louisiana LLC, which is developing a new low-emissions steel production facility in the region.

As part of this agreement, Air Liquide will supply critical industrial gases—including oxygen, nitrogen, and argon—essential for efficient and cleaner steelmaking processes. These gases play a vital role in improving combustion efficiency, reducing impurities, and enabling more sustainable production methods, aligning with the global push toward decarbonisation in heavy industries such as steel.

To meet the anticipated demand, Air Liquide will establish an additional air separation unit (ASU) in St. James Parish, located at the existing Koch Methanol site. This new unit will significantly enhance the company’s production capacity and ensure a reliable and continuous supply of industrial gases to the Hyundai-Posco facility. In parallel, Air Liquide will also expand its pipeline and distribution network infrastructure along the Mississippi River, further strengthening its regional supply chain and operational efficiency.

The project reflects a broader trend in the steel industry, where companies are increasingly investing in cleaner technologies and processes to reduce carbon emissions. By partnering with Hyundai-Posco Louisiana LLC, Air Liquide is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation, providing the essential inputs required for next-generation steel manufacturing.

The supply agreement is expected to commence in 2028, marking a long-term collaboration that supports both industrial growth and environmental sustainability. This investment not only underscores Air Liquide’s commitment to advancing low-carbon solutions but also highlights the strategic importance of Louisiana as a hub for large-scale industrial and energy projects.

With this expansion, Air Liquide continues to strengthen its footprint in North America while contributing to the development of more sustainable industrial ecosystems. The initiative demonstrates how strategic partnerships and infrastructure investments can drive innovation, enhance supply reliability, and support the global shift toward greener manufacturing practices.
