The global metal cutting leader sponsored the Education and Development (E&D) Zone

Metal cutting and manufacturing solutions expert, Sandvik Coromant, recently sponsored the Education and Development (E&D) Zone at the UK’s largest engineering-based manufacturing trade show, MACH 2024. During the week-long show, Steve Geddes, Regional Sales Manager at Sandvik Coromant was visited by The Rt Hon Michelle Donelan MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.

On Tuesday 16 April, The Secretary of State delivered a keynote in the Seminar Theatre at the NEC, Birmingham, on how recent government investments have driven the manufacturing sector forward. These investments include a £4.5 billion boost into advanced manufacturing. Following this, The Secretary of State embarked on a comprehensive tour of MACH’s 600-exhibitor show, exploring various stands, before concluding her visit at the Education & Development (E&D) Zone, sponsored by Sandvik Coromant.

During her visit to the E&D Zone, which served as a check-in area for students attending the show, The Secretary of State engaged with Steve Geddes, Regional Sales Manager at Sandvik Coromant. Their discussion centred around the crucial development of apprentices and young professionals within the manufacturing sector, highlighting Sandvik Cormorant’s commitment to fostering the next generation of engineering talent.

Sandvik Coromant’s commitment to tackling the skills gap is highlighted in its brand mission of Manufacturing Wellness. The new brand mission focuses on nurturing eight manufacturing habits, which are essential for successful and resilient manufacturing companies, one of which is being able attract, develop and retain talented people who are eager to make a difference and nurture their drive to learn.

To support manufacturers in developing this habit, Sandvik Coromant hosts regular training events and webinars from its 14 global Sandvik Coromant Centers, including its UK Center in Halesowen, West Midlands. The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated last year and serves as a national hub for metal cutting expertise. It includes two education stations with two machines equipped for tooling demonstrations, application training and engineering projects, and ultimately, helping manufacturers to develop young talent.

“The success of the E&D Zone at MACH 2024 and the opportunity to engage with The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology made for a truly productive and rewarding week,” commented Steve Geddes, Regional Sales Manager at Sandvik Coromant. “This event and the discussions held by our team with exhibitors, attendees and students alike highlights our commitment to fostering talent and innovation, supporting the next generation of manufacturing experts.”
