Can machining strategies be improved without changing the machine tool, cutting tool or workpiece? According to the latest developments from Sandvik, the answer is yes.
In this latest MTDCNC feature, we explore three powerful digital manufacturing solutions that are helping manufacturers produce complex components more efficiently: ICAM, VERICUT and VERICUT Optimizer.
The demonstration centres around the machining of a highly complex aerospace blisk on a DMG MORI 5-axis machining centre. Components such as these demand absolute confidence in every stage of the programming and machining process, where even small improvements can deliver significant savings.

The journey starts with ICAM. Many manufacturers today operate multiple CAM systems, often requiring different post processors for different machines and software platforms. ICAM removes that complexity by providing post-processing capabilities across virtually all major CAM systems, helping standardise programming and simplify workflows.
Once the NC program has been generated, the next challenge is ensuring it will run safely and accurately on the machine. This is where VERICUT comes into its own. Instead of spending valuable machine time proving out programs using single block and cautious first runs, VERICUT enables manufacturers to verify the complete machining process offline, giving programmers the confidence to release proven code directly to production.

The final stage is where the biggest productivity gains can often be achieved. VERICUT Optimizer intelligently analyses the machining process and adjusts feed rates to maintain optimum cutting conditions throughout the toolpath. The result is the potential for up to 20% faster cycle times on harder materials, while also improving tool life, reducing spindle load and lowering energy consumption.
Together, these three solutions create a streamlined digital workflow that helps manufacturers reduce programming challenges, eliminate unnecessary machine prove-outs and maximise machining efficiency.

Another important development is that ICAM, VERICUT and VERICUT Optimizer are now available as standalone products, allowing manufacturers to invest in the specific solutions that best suit their production requirements.
For manufacturers producing high-value aerospace, medical and precision engineering components, the benefits extend far beyond cycle time reduction. Better tool utilisation, improved machine efficiency and increased confidence in every machining process all contribute to greater productivity and profitability.
