Emag UG Series Universal Grinding Machines Deliver Precision, Flexibility and High-Performance Grinding for Modern Manufacturing!
Emag has expanded its portfolio of advanced grinding technologies with the UG Series of universal cylindrical grinding machines, a versatile platform engineered to meet the demanding precision requirements of modern manufacturing environments. Designed to handle internal, external, and out-of-round grinding applications, the UG Series combines high-performance spindle technology, advanced automation capabilities, and intelligent controls to deliver exceptional accuracy, productivity, and flexibility across a wide range of industries.
As manufacturers continue to seek greater efficiency and tighter tolerances, grinding technology has become increasingly important in producing complex, high-precision components. The UG Series has been developed to address these needs by offering a flexible solution capable of supporting job shops, toolmakers, precision component manufacturers, and large-scale production facilities serving sectors such as automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, and engineering.
The series consists of four machine variants—UG 400, UG 630, UG 1000, and UG 1500—each designed to accommodate different workpiece sizes and production requirements. The models offer grinding lengths of 400 mm, 630 mm, 1,000 mm, and 1,500 mm respectively, providing manufacturers with the flexibility to select a machine configuration that best suits their application needs.
One of the defining features of the UG Series is its advanced grinding head design. Each machine is equipped with direct-drive motorized grinding spindles delivering up to 11 kW of power. Unlike conventional grinding systems that rely on belt-driven mechanisms, the direct-drive configuration eliminates a significant source of vibration and mechanical power loss. This results in smoother operation, improved surface finishes, enhanced dimensional accuracy, and greater overall machine efficiency.
The grinding wheel system is capable of achieving peripheral speeds of up to 50 meters per second, enabling high-performance material removal while maintaining excellent process stability. This combination of power and precision allows manufacturers to achieve superior grinding results across a wide variety of materials and component geometries.
Flexibility is further enhanced through the machine’s automatically swiveling B-axis, which offers positioning capabilities ranging from -15 degrees to +225 degrees with an impressive resolution of 0.0001 degrees. The system can complete a 180-degree repositioning movement in just eight seconds across all machine models, allowing rapid transitions between different grinding operations and minimizing non-productive time.
The advanced B-axis functionality enables operators to perform multiple grinding processes within a single setup, reducing handling requirements and improving overall manufacturing efficiency. This capability is particularly valuable in industries where complex component geometries and tight tolerances are common.
Precision remains a core strength of the UG Series. The workhead incorporates high-quality tapered roller bearings that provide exceptional rigidity and stability during machining operations. This design allows the machines to achieve concentricity accuracy of up to 0.5 micrometers on test workpieces, making them suitable for highly demanding applications where dimensional precision is critical.
The workpiece spindle utilizes a direct-drive system with stepless speed control ranging from 30 to 800 rpm, providing flexibility for different grinding requirements. A swivel range of up to 30 degrees also enables efficient cone grinding operations, expanding the machine’s application range.
For internal grinding applications, the UG 400, UG 630, and UG 1000 models are equipped with high-frequency grinding spindles capable of operating at speeds between 20,000 and 125,000 rpm. These spindles feature oil-air lubrication systems that enhance thermal stability and support consistent high-speed performance.
Manufacturers requiring more advanced grinding capabilities can opt for an additional C-axis workpiece spindle. This feature enables out-of-round grinding and thread grinding operations through synchronized motion between workpiece rotation and grinding spindle feed. The functionality is supported by the FANUC 31iB Plus control system and allows the production of highly complex geometries with exceptional precision.
The tailstock system has also been engineered for accuracy and stability. It features a precision-mounted quill with a diameter of 60 mm and MK4 taper configuration, while the UG 1500 model incorporates a larger 65 mm quill. Micro taper correction capability of ±40 micrometers enables concentricity performance below one micrometer, ensuring superior workpiece alignment throughout the grinding process. Manufacturers can choose between manual and hydraulic tailstock actuation depending on production requirements.
To further enhance process consistency and grinding wheel performance, the UG Series supports multiple dressing configurations. These include a repositionable table-mounted swivel arm dresser, an automated workpiece spindle dresser system designed for batch production environments, and dressing tile holders that provide additional flexibility for manual or supplemental dressing operations.
Machine operation is simplified through the integration of the FANUC 0i-TF Plus control system, which serves as the standard control platform across the UG Series. The control incorporates a dialog-oriented human-machine interface (HMI) that streamlines programming, setup, and machine operation. Even complex grinding processes can be managed efficiently, reducing operator training requirements and improving productivity.
Another significant advantage for manufacturers is FANUC’s extensive global service and support network. For companies operating in the United States and other international markets, access to readily available technical support, spare parts, and maintenance services helps reduce downtime and simplify long-term machine ownership.
The introduction of the UG Series reflects Emag’s commitment to delivering advanced grinding solutions that address the evolving needs of modern manufacturing. By combining direct-drive spindle technology, high-precision motion systems, flexible grinding configurations, and industry-leading control technology, the UG Series offers manufacturers a powerful platform for producing high-quality components with maximum efficiency and accuracy.
As industries continue to demand tighter tolerances, greater production flexibility, and improved operational efficiency, Emag’s UG Series universal grinding machines are positioned to provide the precision, reliability, and performance required to meet the challenges of next-generation manufacturing.
