ABB has unveiled what it describes as the world’s first IE6 Hyper-Efficiency motor certified for hazardous industrial areas, marking a significant advancement in energy-efficient motor technology for heavy industries. The newly launched motor is designed to help industrial operators reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs and significantly cut carbon emissions while maintaining high levels of safety and reliability in demanding environments.

The new IE6 Increased Safety motor has been developed using ABB’s advanced synchronous reluctance (SynRM) technology, which operates without the use of magnets or rare earth materials. This magnet-free design not only improves sustainability but also reduces dependency on critical raw materials often associated with high-performance electric motor technologies.

The motor has received both ATEX and IECEx certifications, making it suitable for use in hazardous Zones 1 and 2 where flammable gases, vapours or combustible dust may be present. These certifications are especially important for industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, marine, pharmaceuticals and food processing, where equipment safety and operational reliability are critical requirements.

ABB stated that the new IE6 motor can reduce energy losses by up to 60 percent compared to conventional IE3 induction motors commonly used in industrial facilities today. Energy efficiency improvements of this scale can have a major impact on industrial operating costs, particularly in applications where motors run continuously for long periods.

The motor is also designed to operate seamlessly with variable speed drives, allowing it to maintain high efficiency even at partial loads. This capability makes the technology especially suitable for applications such as pumps, compressors and industrial fans, where varying operating conditions often impact overall system efficiency.

According to ABB, replacing a standard industrial motor with the new IE6 Hyper-Efficiency version over a 20-year operational lifespan could result in energy savings of approximately €87,520 while preventing nearly 157,540 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The company noted that this reduction is equivalent to the annual emissions generated by around 37 petrol-powered passenger vehicles.

The launch reflects growing global pressure on industrial sectors to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Electric motors account for a substantial portion of industrial electricity consumption worldwide, making high-efficiency motor technologies increasingly important in achieving sustainability and decarbonization targets.

Stefan Floeck referenced the International Energy Agency’s Energy Efficiency Report 2025, emphasizing the need for sustainable technologies that are both effective and economically accessible for industrial operators. He stated that ABB’s latest IE6 motor aligns closely with the company’s “Engineered to Outrun” strategy, which focuses on helping industries improve performance while reducing environmental impact.

Floeck further explained that the new motor provides an ideal solution for customers seeking to lower operational expenses while meeting increasingly stringent sustainability goals and energy-efficiency standards.

The IE6 motor range is initially available starting from 110 kW, while ABB also offers IE5 versions for applications up to 90 kW. In addition to improved energy efficiency, the technology is expected to provide lower maintenance requirements, higher operational reliability and more cost-effective installation opportunities for industrial users.

As industries worldwide continue transitioning toward cleaner and more efficient operations, innovations such as ABB’s IE6 Hyper-Efficiency motor are expected to play a crucial role in reducing industrial energy consumption and supporting long-term sustainability initiatives. The launch further strengthens ABB’s position as a leading provider of advanced industrial electrification and automation solutions focused on energy optimization and environmental responsibility.
