Sandvik Coromant Launches CoroTurn Plus to Deliver Real-Time Data and Automated Control in Turning Operations!

Sandvik Coromant has introduced the CoroTurn Plus sensorized turning adapter, a next-generation solution designed to bring real-time visibility, process security, and automation to turning operations. By capturing and analysing live machining data, the system enables manufacturers to improve part quality, stabilise processes, and reduce waste across production environments.

At the core of CoroTurn Plus is its ability to monitor critical machining parameters—such as cutting forces, vibration, chatter, and in-cut status—in real time. This level of visibility allows operators to detect process variations as they occur, helping to prevent defects, maintain consistency, and optimise machining performance. By transforming previously hidden cutting conditions into actionable insights, the system supports more informed decision-making on the shopfloor.

The solution operates across two levels of digital integration. When used with CoroPlus Viewer, it provides real-time visualisation of machining data on a PC or tablet, enabling operators to monitor performance and respond quickly to deviations. Features such as audible alerts, value inspection, and deviation tracking help accelerate root-cause analysis and support continuous process improvement.

For more advanced automation, CoroTurn Plus integrates with CoroPlus Connected, which links directly to the machine’s numerical control (NC) system. In this mode, the system goes beyond monitoring by enabling automated protective actions. Users can define limits for parameters such as vibration, load, and chatter, and if these thresholds are exceeded, the machine can automatically initiate corrective actions—such as stopping, retracting, or adjusting operations—to protect tools, components, and equipment.

This integration allows machines to handle routine decisions autonomously within predefined boundaries, increasing operational efficiency and enabling extended unmanned operation, particularly during night shifts. As a result, manufacturers can improve machine utilisation while reducing downtime and operator intervention.

Another key advantage of the system is its ability to support predictive tool management. By analysing accumulated tool condition data, operators can identify when cutting inserts are approaching end-of-life and replace them at the optimal time. This helps extend tool life, avoid unexpected failures, and reduce production interruptions.

CoroTurn Plus also enhances traceability and process documentation by recording detailed cutting data for each operation. This enables manufacturers to compare batch performance, detect material inconsistencies early, and maintain comprehensive records for quality assurance and certification requirements.

Additional features include automated system checks, seamless connection and disconnection from the tool setup, and built-in controls for starting and stopping data recording. These industrialised capabilities ensure reliable operation and ease of integration into existing workflows.
